Hire a Dedicated PHP Developer in India
In-house Laravel and PHP developers in Delhi and Lucknow, working hours that face New York, hired by the month or for a fixed-scope build. You interview the developer before signing, work starts within 24 hours of signing, and every line of code goes into repositories held in your name.
On this page
To hire a PHP developer in India through Digital Heroes, tell us what the application does and which PHP and framework versions it runs on. We put forward a developer from our own staff, you interview them, and once the contract is signed they begin within 24 hours, which means the next working day. They work from Delhi or Lucknow on hours aligned with New York and commit to repositories that belong to you.
What you get with a PHP hire from our team
You hire a person who already works for us, not a profile found after you have paid. The developer you interview is the one who joins your standups, opens pull requests in your repository and answers your messages. If the interview leaves you unsure, say so before anything is signed.
PHP work rarely stays inside PHP. A Laravel application usually comes with a JavaScript front end, a queue, a payment provider and a server that somebody has to keep patched. Laravel and PHP are on our in-house bench, and so are Angular, Magento and Node.js, so when your project reaches one of those edges there is a colleague on the bench who covers it.
Part of every PHP hire

|---|---|
| On our payroll, in India | Employed by us in India, so salary, benefits and Indian payroll stay with us and you pay the company named in your contract |
| An interview first | You question the engineer who will write the PHP, ideally against a small piece of your own code |
| Starts within 24 hours | The developer is at work on the first working day after you sign |
| Mutual NDA, one page | In place as soon as a scoping call is on the calendar, so code and data are covered before you send them |

Why hire a PHP developer in India at all
Three things bring US companies to India for PHP work: the size of the talent pool, the rates, and a working day that runs while theirs is closed. The first is the easiest to check. GitHub's Octoverse 2025 report counts more than 5.2 million developers who joined from India in 2025, a little over 14 percent of its 36 million new developers.
The same report says India has overtaken the United States as the largest base of contributors to public and open source projects on GitHub, and projects 57.5 million developers in India by 2030. Open source matters here because Laravel, Symfony, WordPress and most of the Composer packages a PHP application depends on are open source projects.
PHP is hired for by name in that market. AmbitionBox, the Indian salary and jobs site, listed about 1,600 PHP developer openings on 17 October 2026. Its skill counts on the same page put Laravel in about 1,000 open jobs, CodeIgniter in 844 and CakePHP in 506. Those two older frameworks are still asked for, which helps when your application was built on one of them years ago.
Rates are the second reason, and the rate table below sets out the public numbers. The third is the clock. India keeps one time zone all year, and the gap to the US is wide enough for a developer to finish a task before your morning starts. That gap is also the main cost of the arrangement, so the time zone section shows exactly how much of your day it shares.
What India does not change is the spread in quality. The cheapest band in GoodFirms' 2026 survey, under $20 an hour, is the one it matches to MVPs where cost matters more than quality and security. A deep market holds more strong developers and more weak ones, so the interview carries more weight here, not less.
Name the codebase first, then the developer
Say which kind of PHP you have before anyone reads a CV, because Laravel feature work, an old core PHP upgrade and a Magento store call for different people. Each has its own working knowledge: a Magento developer knows its modules, indexers and checkout, a Laravel developer lives in models, queues and tests, and someone upgrading a fifteen-year-old site spends most of the week reading code nobody documented. None of that transfers in a week.
| You run | What the developer does | Read more |
|---|---|---|
| A Laravel application | New features, APIs, queued jobs, tests, and moves from one Laravel version to the next | Laravel and PHP support dates |
| Core PHP, CodeIgniter or CakePHP | Reads the code before changing it, then upgrades PHP and the framework one version at a time behind tests | The upgrade question |
| A Magento or Adobe Commerce store | Extensions, integrations, version upgrades and checkout work | Magento development |
| WordPress or WooCommerce | Themes, plugins, checkout and speed | WordPress and WooCommerce development |
| A PHP API behind a web or mobile app | Endpoints, sign in, and the outside services the app depends on | API development and integration |
Many PHP hires are really upgrade jobs
On 17 October 2026, php.net lists 8.2 as the oldest PHP branch still receiving security fixes, and only until 31 December 2026; 8.1 and everything older is end of life. Each branch gets two years of full support and two more of security fixes. PHP 8.4 is covered until the end of 2028 and 8.5, released in November 2025, until the end of 2029.
Plenty of live sites sit behind those dates. W3Techs found version 7 on 27.1 percent of the PHP websites it could measure that day and version 5 on 7.7 percent, so more than a third run a branch with no security fixes at all, before counting the early 8.x releases.
Laravel runs on its own clock: bug fixes for 18 months and security fixes for two years after each major release, per its release notes. Laravel 11 lost security fixes on 12 March 2026, Laravel 12 keeps them until 24 February 2027, and Laravel 13, released on 17 March 2026, runs on PHP 8.3 to 8.5. On Laravel 11 or older, spend the first weeks of any hire on that path, not on new features.
IST against US hours: how much of your day is shared
India uses a single zone, Indian Standard Time at UTC+05:30, and has no daylight saving time. The US moves its clocks twice a year. In 2026, daylight saving time ran from 8 March to 1 November, so the gap to India is one hour shorter in those months than in winter.
| US zone | 9 AM there in summer time | 9 AM there in winter |
|---|---|---|
| Eastern, New York | 6:30 PM in India | 7:30 PM in India |
| Central, Chicago | 7:30 PM in India | 8:30 PM in India |
| Mountain, Denver | 8:30 PM in India | 9:30 PM in India |
| Pacific, Los Angeles | 9:30 PM in India | 10:30 PM in India |
Engineering in Delhi and Lucknow keeps hours aligned with New York; separately, the New York office answers on weekdays from 9 AM until 6 PM Eastern, on the day you write. An East Coast team therefore gets live overlap inside its own working day. A West Coast team gets less of it, and should plan on a written handoff at the end of each day.
There are two ways to run the day, and they can be combined. In the first, you and the developer agree a window of shared hours for standups, reviews and questions. In the second, you write tickets and review pull requests at the end of your day, the developer works while you sleep, and the morning starts with finished work waiting for review.
Put the agreed hours in the statement of work, in writing, so that a busy week cannot quietly wear them down. The free time zone planner shows the shared hours between your own city and India.
PHP rates and salaries in India, from public data
This page carries no Digital Heroes rate card. We price a developer by the month after a call, when the work and the weekly hours are clear. What follows is public market data, so that a quote from anyone, us included, can be measured against an outside figure.
Upwork's page on PHP developers in India puts typical hourly rates at $12 to $22, against a US baseline of $50 to $79 for the same role. Those are freelance rates on its marketplace. For firms rather than freelancers, the GoodFirms 2026 cost survey polled over 100 software companies during September and October 2025, and South Asia appears in both of its two cheapest bands.
Rates and salaries from four public sources
| Publisher | Number | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Upwork, PHP developers in India | $12 to $22 an hour | Typical freelance rates on its marketplace |
| Upwork, same page | $50 to $79 an hour | Its US baseline for the same role |
| GoodFirms, cheapest band | Under $20 an hour: 12.5 percent of the firms | Regions it names: India, Bangladesh and Pakistan in South Asia, some of Africa, and the smaller Eastern European hubs |
| GoodFirms, middle band | $20 to $50 an hour: 56.3 percent of the firms | Regions it names: Eastern Europe, Latin America, Southeast Asia, Africa and South Asia |
| GoodFirms, onshore band | $100 to $250 an hour: 10.9 percent of the firms | Regions it names: the US and Canada, plus Western Europe |
| AmbitionBox, PHP developer salaries | ₹2.6 to ₹2.9 lakh a year at 1 to 3 years; ₹4.4 to ₹4.8 lakh at 3 to 6; ₹6.3 to ₹7 lakh at 6 to 9 | 17.6k salaries reported in India, updated 16 October 2026 |
| PayScale, PHP developer in India | Average base salary ₹452,199 a year, in a range of ₹195k to ₹1m | 129 salary profiles, updated 2 June 2026 |
Over a month of roughly 160 working hours, Upwork's India band works out to $1,920 to $3,520 for a full-time freelancer, while GoodFirms' $20 to $50 band works out to $3,200 to $8,000 billed by a firm.
The salaries look far lower, and the gap is the useful part. At the European Central Bank's reference rates for 16 October 2026, which put a dollar at about 95 rupees, ₹4.4 to ₹4.8 lakh is roughly $4,600 to $5,100 a year. That is what a developer with three to six years is paid before anything else.
Everything a buyer actually needs sits between the salary and the rate: the employer's costs in India, equipment, a lead who reviews the code, cover for leave, a replacement if the developer resigns, and the vendor's margin. When a quote lands close to the salary figures, ask which of those is missing. Usually it is the code review, the testing, or a person you can reach when the developer stops replying.
Two free calculators run the comparison on your own figures. The offshore development cost calculator sets one block of build hours against offshore, nearshore and US rates, while the development team cost calculator estimates a team's monthly burn from the roles you add, QA, design and project management included.
How the contract and the payments work
There are three ways to take a PHP developer from us. The model you pick decides who directs the work, who answers for the result and how you are billed, so pick it by the engineering leadership on your side today, rather than by the monthly figure.
| Model | You get | Who steers the work | Billing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Developer in your team | A PHP developer from our staff, working in your sprints and your repository | Your engineering lead | Billed monthly |
| Dedicated PHP team | A lead, PHP developers and QA responsible for a defined part of your product | Our lead, working to your roadmap | Billed monthly, usually for three months or longer |
| Fixed-scope build | Separately priced discovery lasting two weeks, then a single price for the written scope | Our team, held to that scope | Discovery, then the fixed price |
The 24-hour promise covers a single developer added to your team. Assembling a full team takes more time, which our page on hiring a dedicated development team explains. A fixed-scope build begins with discovery, not code, and discovery closes with either a fixed price or advice not to build at all, with the product to buy named.
The paperwork, in order
First comes a mutual NDA, one page long, signed when the scoping call is booked. Next is the MSA, which names your contracting party: either Digital Heroes Technologies Pvt Ltd, the Indian company, or Digital Heroesco LLC, the US one. Ask for the developer, the shared hours and the start date in the statement of work. US engagements usually default to New York law, with New York as the venue, and other choices can be negotiated before signing.
Once signed, the work changes only through a written change order. If your company buys through purchase orders, raise their terms before the MSA is final: purchase-order terms that clash with the MSA apply only if an authorised officer of ours accepts them in writing.
Paying a company in India, not a person
Paying an Indian company is simpler than paying an Indian individual. The developer is our employee, so salary, benefits and Indian payroll stay with us, and you pay the company named in your MSA. Hire someone directly and those questions become yours: Upwork's India page itself tells buyers that tax rules for hiring freelancers vary and change often, and to confirm them with a local tax advisor first.
Code ownership, on paper and in practice
Under our MSA, after the last invoice is settled, everything written or designed specifically for your project is assigned to you. What stays with us is what existed before your project or was built for reuse across clients, such as libraries and tooling, plus portfolio rights over the finished work, which you can decline in writing.
A contract that must be pure work for hire, with no portfolio use at all, is written that way in the statement of work and priced in the open.
Ownership on paper is only half of it. Keep the repositories, the hosting and server accounts, the domain and any paid PHP packages or Magento extensions in your company's name from the first day, and give our developer a seat that you can take back at any time.
Six questions to put to any PHP developer before you sign
Talk to the engineer who will commit the code, not the account manager. Each question below starts from something that goes wrong on a live PHP site, and most link to the official documentation that gives the answer, so you can score the replies without writing PHP yourself. Ask all six of every candidate on your shortlist, including ours, and compare the answers side by side.
- "We add a second web server behind a load balancer, and users start getting logged out. Why?" PHP keeps sessions in files on the server that created them unless told otherwise; the session configuration page gives files as the default handler. A request that lands on the other server finds no session. The fix is a shared store such as Redis or the database, or, as a stopgap, sticky sessions at the load balancer.
- "What does
0 == "a"return on PHP 8, and what did it return on PHP 7?" False on PHP 8 and true on PHP 7. The comparison operators page explains that before 8.0 a string compared with a number was converted to a number first. Expect the candidate to know why legacy code can change behaviour after an upgrade, and to reach for===by habit. - "What would stop us moving this application to a newer PHP version tomorrow?" Usually a package rather than our own code. Composer's why-not command lists the installed packages that block a given PHP version, which turns "can we upgrade?" into a list of named obstacles. A candidate who has done an upgrade starts there, then asks what tests exist before anything moves.
- "How do you find out whether a package we depend on has a known vulnerability?" Composer's audit command checks installed packages against published security advisories and also reports abandoned packages. Listen for it running in the pipeline on every change, and for a judgement on whether the flagged code is ever reached in your application.
- "Where do PHP errors go in production, and what does a visitor see?" Into a log the team watches, never onto the page. PHP's error configuration notes say display_errors should never be used on production systems, and the bundled production settings switch it off. A candidate who has ever found a stack trace on a live checkout page will say so.
- "Sending the order confirmation email makes checkout take four seconds. What do you change?" Move the email out of the request, onto a queue that a worker process sends from, with retries, so the customer sees the confirmation page at once. Laravel queues and Symfony Messenger both do this; a cron job reading a table of pending emails is a fair answer on older code.
If you want a work sample, pay for it and keep it to about three hours. Hand over a small form handler that saves a customer enquiry and emails the team, and ask for it made fit for a live site: input validated, the query bound rather than built from strings, a repeated submit ignored, and the email moved out of the request. Ask for a short note on what changed and what they would do next.
Read the note before the code. A candidate who writes down what they chose to leave alone, and why, will tell you the same when something on your own system looks wrong. For work they have already done, ask to see a pull request someone else reviewed, comments included: how a developer answers a reviewer is close to how they will work with you.
What a new PHP developer does in the first fourteen days
Because the developer starts on the working day after you sign, access is the first thing that can slow them down. Day one is spent getting in, not writing code, so line these up before signing: the repository, a staging server or a local setup, a copy of the database with personal data masked, the error logs, and the name of the person who approves releases.
- Day 1, the application running. The developer clones the repository, installs dependencies with Composer, loads the masked database and notes every gap, such as a missing environment file, API key or test account.
- Days 2 to 5, a written assessment of the code. The PHP and framework versions against their support dates, packages with known security advisories from composer audit, what the tests cover, and how a release really reaches production. One small fix goes all the way through review to production in the same week.
- Week 2, the first real change. An item from your backlog, or the first step of an upgrade if the read found a branch past its security date.
- Day 14, a written summary. Work shipped, blockers met, and the order the developer proposes for the coming month.
No one on your side who can review PHP pull requests? Then a single developer in your team will struggle, and a dedicated team suits you better: our lead is accountable for the result, and every build passes our QA team before you are asked to look at it.
Our in-house PHP bench, and what you can verify first
Every PHP developer we place is already on our staff; none is a freelancer recruited once you sign. Our page on PHP developers compared with freelancers sets that route beside Toptal and Upwork. This page names no developer and no client build. You meet the proposed developer on the interview call, and once the scoping call is booked and the NDA signed, we set up reference calls with past clients.
Delhi is our engineering headquarters, covering the web platform, backend, QA and DevOps, and our Lucknow office holds full-stack and web developers. Every engineer reports up to our CTO, Divyansh Singh, who decides the architecture and sets the engineering rules the team works to. Leadership and US account directors sit in New York at 1140 Broadway, in NoMad, where New York clients can hold kickoffs and reviews in person.
Three records can be checked without contacting us. On Clutch the company rates 5.0 from 66 verified reviews (checked 13 October 2026). The company is listed by Dun & Bradstreet under DUNS number 650878346, and as a Tier 1 supplier on the UN Global Marketplace. The legal entities and offices are listed, with how to verify each, on the page about our custom software development company.
Five cases where we would send you elsewhere
Some requests are better served by someone else, and we tell you so on the first call. These are the usual ones.
- The developer has to be in the US. Every PHP developer we place is based in India, which rules us out wherever a contract or a security policy demands engineers on US soil. If you are still weighing offshore firms in general, start with our list of offshore software companies.
- Your team mainly needs to edit pages and publish posts. That is a content management job, covered on our WordPress development page; a custom PHP application would turn every page change into a developer task.
- The slowdown sits outside your code. When the time goes on a payment gateway, a shipping provider or a hosting plan that has run out of room, a developer by the month will find it and then wait on someone else to fix it. A short audit names the bottleneck for less.
- You are starting a new product from nothing. Our default stack for new builds is Next.js and React, and we would say so on the call; our hire web developers page covers that route.
- Only the hourly price matters. Staffing firms that compete purely on rate will undercut us, and the rate table above shows how low that market goes.
For anything else, whether a single Laravel developer on an existing application or a team for a long upgrade, the first step is a free 30-minute call. If the work is a whole system rather than a hire, see how we work as a bespoke software house.

Quick answers on rates, PHP versions and contracts
How much does it cost to hire a PHP developer per hour in India?
Upwork puts typical rates for PHP developers in India at $12 to $22 an hour, against $50 to $79 for the same role in the US. Firms charge more than freelancers: 56.3 percent of the companies in the GoodFirms 2026 survey charge $20 to $50 an hour, and South Asia is one of the regions in that band. Our own monthly rate is quoted after a call, when the scope and the weekly hours are clear.
What is the salary of a PHP developer in India?
AmbitionBox, from 17.6k salaries reported in India, puts PHP developers at ₹2.6 to ₹2.9 lakh a year with one to three years of experience, ₹4.4 to ₹4.8 lakh at three to six years and ₹6.3 to ₹7 lakh at six to nine. PayScale's average base salary is ₹452,199. A lakh is 100,000 rupees, and a dollar bought about 95 rupees in mid October 2026.
Is PHP still relevant in 2026?
Yes, largely because of what already runs on it. On 17 October 2026, W3Techs counted 69.4 percent of the websites with an identifiable server-side language as running PHP. The language and Laravel are both still shipping new versions: PHP 8.5 arrived in November 2025 and Laravel 13 in March 2026. A working PHP application rarely needs a rewrite to stay secure; it needs its upgrades.
Where can I find PHP developers in India?
In three places. Freelance marketplaces such as Upwork, where you screen and manage the person yourself; job boards and LinkedIn, if you can employ someone in India; and Indian development companies with PHP developers on staff, which is what we are. Whichever you pick, talk to the engineer who will do the work, and keep the repository in your own name from the first day.
Is PHP developer in demand?
In India, yes. AmbitionBox listed about 1,600 PHP developer openings on 17 October 2026, and about 1,000 open jobs asking for Laravel. Upkeep adds to it: W3Techs found version 7 or older on more than a third of the PHP websites it measured, and every one of those branches is past the end of its security support.
How soon can a PHP developer from India start?
With us, on the next working day: a hired developer starts within 24 hours of signing. Day one is spent on access to the repository, a staging or local setup, a masked database copy and the error logs, so prepare those first. Putting a whole dedicated team together takes longer, and on fixed-scope work the first two weeks are discovery, not code.
Can you take over and upgrade an old PHP application?
Yes, and it is often the job. The developer reads the code first and writes down the PHP and framework versions, the packages with known security advisories and what the tests cover. Upgrades then go one version at a time behind tests. On 17 October 2026, PHP 8.2 is the oldest branch still getting security fixes, and only until 31 December 2026.
Who owns the code, and do you sign an NDA?
You do, and yes. When the final invoice is paid, our MSA assigns you everything built specifically for your project, while anything we had built before your project stays ours. Both sides sign a mutual NDA, one page long, when the scoping call is booked, so it covers anything you share afterwards. Hold the repositories and servers in your company's name throughout.
Should I hire a PHP freelancer, an employee or an Indian company?
Decide first whether you want to employ someone, contract a freelancer or contract a company, because that choice decides who handles payroll, code review and replacement. Then test the person rather than the brochure: the six interview questions above, a short paid task on code like yours, and a call with a past client. Put the shared hours and code ownership in writing before work starts.
