For jackets, the calculator asks chest, waist, hip, and sleeve length, plus whether the jacket will be worn over baselayers or as a single shell. For boots: foot length, width (narrow, medium, wide), arch height, and the intended terrain.
For helmets: head circumference, measured above the eyebrows where the helmet actually sits. Each question is worth something. Remove any one and the match accuracy degrades.
Two tools work here. True Fit suits large multi-brand catalogs; REI and Dick's Sporting Goods use it. Single-brand stores do better with a custom-built calculator, at 500 to 3,000 per month of engineering work amortized across 3 to 5 years of use. The fit calculator question every brand gets wrong: "what is your usual size?" That tells you the buyer's bias, not the buyer's measurement. Outdoor returns drop when the questions are physical (chest in inches, foot length in centimeters, head circumference above the eyebrow) and contextual (over a baselayer, with a midweight, on technical scree). The five-question calculator outperforms the twelve-question one because it asks the right five: measurements the buyer can verify with a tape, not vibes.
