Heads up: the first time you remove a background, your browser downloads a one-time AI engine (about 40 MB). After that it runs fully on your device, even offline. Nothing is ever sent to a server.

Why remove backgrounds in the browser?

Most “free” background removers upload your photos to their servers and cap you at a handful of images. This tool runs the cut-out model directly on your machine, completely private, no watermark, no limit, and it keeps working offline once the engine is cached. Transparent-PNG export and solid-colour backgrounds are all free.

How to use the Background Remover

This tool cuts the subject out of a photo and removes everything behind it. An AI model runs inside your browser, works out which pixels belong to the subject, and gives you a PNG with a transparent background or a solid color of your choice. It suits product shots, profile pictures, slides and quick design mockups.

Step by step

  1. Add a photo

    Drop an image on the card that says "Drop an image here", or click the card to pick a file. On a keyboard, focus the card and press Enter. JPG, PNG and WebP all work. Your picture appears in the Original panel straight away.

  2. Choose the background

    Under Background of the result, keep the checkered Transparent swatch for a see-through PNG, or pick White, Black, Moss or Amber. The color picker at the end of the row sets any other color.

  3. Remove the background

    Press Remove background. The first run downloads the AI engine, about 40 MB, and the progress bar shows the download and then the removal. The button reads Working while it runs.

  4. Compare backgrounds

    Once the cut-out exists, click any swatch or change the color picker. The result is recolored instantly without running the AI again.

  5. Download the PNG

    Press Download PNG. The file keeps your original name with -no-bg added, so photo.jpg becomes photo-no-bg.png. Press Clear to remove the image and start over.

Reading the result

  • With Transparent selected, the Result panel shows the cut-out on a checkerboard. The checkerboard is not part of the image; it marks the areas that are transparent. With a solid color selected, the panel shows that color instead.
  • The line under the panels lists the width and height in pixels, the file size, and PNG (transparent) or PNG (solid background), depending on the background you picked.
  • The result is always a PNG, even when you start from a JPG or WebP.
  • Fine hair, fur, glass and motion blur are the hardest edges for any automatic cut-out. Check them up close before you use the image.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Use a photo where the subject is in focus and stands apart from the background. Clear edges give the cleanest cut.
  • Keep Transparent selected if the image will sit on top of other designs, such as a slide or a product page. Pick a solid color when the place you upload to does not support transparency.
  • Changing the background after the first run costs nothing and is instant, so compare a few colors before you download.
  • If you see "Could not load the AI engine", check your connection and press Remove background again. The engine has to download once before it can run.

Privacy and limits

Your photo is processed by your own browser and is never uploaded. The first run downloads the engine, about 40 MB: the script comes from cdn.jsdelivr.net and the library then fetches its model files from its own public host. Your image is not part of those downloads. Nothing is saved, so closing the tab or pressing Clear removes the image.

Is the Background Remover free?
Yes, completely free for everyone. No sign-up, no account, no watermark and no usage limits.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The AI model runs entirely in your browser on your own device, so your photos never leave your computer and nothing is sent to a server.
Why does the first run take a moment?
The first time you remove a background, your browser downloads a one-time AI engine of about 40 MB. It is cached afterwards, so every later run is fast and works even offline.
What formats can I use, and what do I get back?
You can drop a JPG, PNG or WebP. The result is always a PNG, transparent if you leave the background empty, or composited onto the solid colour you pick.
Can I change the background colour after removing it?
Yes. Once the cut-out exists, switching between transparent, the preset colours or a custom hex re-composites instantly without re-running the AI, so it is effectively free.
Does removing the background work on any subject?
It works best on clear subjects, people, products, animals or objects with defined edges. Very fine hair, glass or heavy motion blur can be harder, as with any automatic cut-out.
