Publishing metadata travels in ONIX 3.1, an XML schema maintained by EDItEUR. It is the standard every distributor, wholesaler, and library uses. One ONIX record carries ISBN, title, contributor roles (author, editor, illustrator, translator), format, street date, publisher, imprint, BISAC subject codes, audience, jacket copy, cover image URLs, price, and distribution rights.
The ingestion pipeline pulls ONIX from your distributor (Ingram, Baker and Taylor, PGW, Consortium). It parses the XML and maps each field to a Shopify product metafield or variant attribute. Weekly scheduled runs keep the catalog current. ONIX update feeds handle price changes, cover art updates, and street-date moves without human touch.
Self-distributing publishers usually pull ONIX from the title-management system (Biblio, Klopotek, Firebrand) rather than a distributor. Either way the pattern holds: ONIX is the source of truth, Shopify is the storefront, and the ingestion pipeline is the bridge. Skip ONIX and hand-enter titles, and you lose 3 to 10 hours per title. You also introduce inconsistencies that break library-facing data exports later.
