PHP Developers for Hire who already work on our team

In-house Laravel, PHP and Magento developers, taken on inside your team, as a dedicated team or for a fixed-scope build. You interview the developer before signing and work starts within 24 hours of signing. Below, our terms sit beside those of Toptal, Upwork, Arc, Proxify and Uplers, gaps included.

quick answer

Toptal, Upwork, Arc, Proxify and Uplers all supply PHP developers, and they differ most on who does the vetting, how long a trial runs and what happens when a hire does not work out. Digital Heroes is not a platform: our PHP developers are on our own staff, you interview the one we propose, and work starts within 24 hours of signing.

§ 01 · the platforms

PHP developers for hire on five platforms, and with us

Google answers this search mostly with marketplaces, so the fairest start is to set them side by side. Every cell about another company comes from that company's own pages, read on 17 October 2026 and listed under sources. Where a page is silent, the cell says so instead of guessing. Our row sits at the bottom, gaps and all.

The vetting differs in kind. A marketplace or network screens freelancers it does not employ and sends you those who passed. We put forward a developer who already works here and leave the final test to you, in the interview. Either can work; what matters is that someone you trust has read the developer's code before it touches yours.

Five hiring platforms and Digital Heroes on vetting, speed, trial, what happens when the fit is wrong, and published prices, each read on the company's own pages on 17 October 2026
RouteVetting, as it describes itFirst candidatesTrialIf the fit is wrongPrice it publishes
Upwork, open marketplaceYou do it, from proposals, work history and client feedback; the platform adds identity verification and payment protectionFirst proposal about three hours after a job post, on averageNot described; you pay for approved work, hourly or by milestoneNot described on the pages readMedian $15 to $30 an hour, plus a client fee of up to 7.99 percent
Toptal, screened networkFewer than 3 percent of applicants accepted, after language, skills and live screening and a test project of one to three weeksA match in under 24 hours on average; hiring in about 48 hoursUp to two weeks, not billed if you are not satisfiedAnother developer, with a second no-risk trialNone on the PHP page; cost is discussed on a call
Arc, screened networkSays it lists the top 2 percent, after communication and technical assessmentsMatches shown at once through its HireAI searchUp to two weeks for freelance hires, on its pricing pageNot described on the pages readFreelance $15 to $110 or more an hour; 20 percent of salary for a full-time hire
Proxify, screened networkAbout 1 percent of applicants join, after five stages ending in a live technical interview with senior engineersA shortlist in an average of 2 daysOne week, unpaid if you are not fully satisfiedTwo weeks' notice ends the contract; you may move the developer to your own payrollFrom €31.90 an hour
Uplers, screened networkTop 1 percent, vetted with AI and human reviewThree to five profiles within 48 hours; onboarding typically 2 to 4 weeksNo trial described; a 30-day cancellation option insteadFree replacement within 90 days for full-time hires, and for the life of a contract roleFrom $2,500, period not stated
Digital Heroes, in-house teamDevelopers already on our staff; you interview the one we proposeWork starts within 24 hours of signing, the next working dayNo published trial; the interview comes before signingNo published replacement guarantee; your repository, decision records and runbooks mean the next engineer starts from documentsNo rate card; quoted after a free 30-minute call

Two patterns stand out. Every screened network publishes a way out early: a trial at Toptal, Arc and Proxify, a 30-day cancellation at Uplers. And of the five, only Upwork prints a percentage fee on top of each payment; Arc charges 20 percent of the annual salary when you hire someone full time, and Proxify says its monthly price includes all expenses.

What our row offers instead is a developer already working inside a company, a start on the next working day, and colleagues for design, QA and other stacks when the work outgrows one person. If a written trial is a hard requirement, take one of the networks above, and tell us so on the first call so nobody loses a week.

§ 02 · the profile

Read the profile before the interview

Every platform publishes a card for each developer, and the cards are not alike. Five facts decide most PHP hires: how many years the person has spent in PHP itself, which frameworks they have shipped in, the hours they keep, the day they can start, and one past project you can look at. The table shows which of those the public cards carried on 17 October 2026.

What the public PHP developer cards on each platform showed on 17 October 2026, against the five facts a buyer needs before an interview
PlatformYears in PHPFrameworksHours or time zoneStart datePast work
UpworkNot on the cardSkill tagsCity and countryNot shownJobs completed, rating and hourly rate
ToptalOnly where the bio says itSkill tagsUTC offset and countryNot shownPrevious employers, and member since
ArcYears per skill, PHP includedSkill listCountry and UTC offsetNot shown; availability says full time or freelancePrevious employer
ProxifyTotal years of experienceAn "expert in" listCountryNot shownA short bio, and member since
UplersTotal years of experienceSkill tagsNot on the cardNot shownA short bio

No card shows a start date, and only Arc separates years in PHP from years in software. Ask for both in writing before the interview, along with the PHP and framework versions the person last worked on. A developer with ten years of software and two of PHP is a different hire from one with ten years of PHP, and the card will not always tell you which you are reading.

We publish no developer cards, and this page names nobody. You get the same five facts from us directly: the developer we propose answers them in the interview, the start is the next working day after you sign, and past client work is walked through once a one-page mutual NDA is signed. No PHP client build is cleared for publication on this site yet, so there is no PHP case study here.

§ 03 · frameworks

Frameworks our staff cover, and the ones we leave to others

PHP on its own says little; the framework decides who can work in your code. Our in-house PHP developers cover Laravel, plain PHP written without a framework, and Magento. All five platforms in the comparison above mention Symfony, CodeIgniter and Drupal on their PHP pages, so for those three, filter there by framework rather than by language.

Seven PHP frameworks and platforms, whether our staff cover each one, and where to go next
Your code runs onFrom usNext step
LaravelYes, developers on our staffBook the call and send the Laravel and PHP versions
Plain PHP, no frameworkYes, developers on our staffBook the call and send the PHP version and the hosting
Magento or Adobe CommerceYes, developers on our staffSee Magento development
WordPress or WooCommerceAs services of their ownSee WordPress development and WooCommerce development
SymfonyNot claimed on this pageFilter a platform above by Symfony
CodeIgniterNot claimed on this pageFilter a platform above by CodeIgniter
DrupalNot claimed on this pageFilter a platform above by Drupal

A PHP application rarely runs alone, so it helps that the people around the developer cover the rest of the stack. Angular, React, Node.js and Python developers are on our staff as well, which means a front end, a service or a report beside the PHP code goes to a colleague rather than a second vendor.

Whichever route you take, put the PHP version in the first message. If you are not sure of it, run your site through our free HTTP headers checker: an X-Powered-By header often names the exact version, and php.net ends security fixes for PHP 8.2 on 31 December 2026.

§ 04 · the trial

Trial windows, and how to use one

A trial is only worth what you put into it. Proxify's week is about five working days, and the two weeks at Toptal and Arc are at most ten. A developer who spends the first two of those waiting for logins has been judged on almost nothing, so the preparation starts before the clock does.

  • Before the first day, write the pass mark. One sentence on what would make you keep the developer, agreed with whoever on your side reviews code. Without it, the decision drifts to a feeling at the end of the window.
  • Have access ready. The repository, a staging server, a copy of the database with customer data removed, and the production PHP version and extensions.
  • Choose one real ticket, not a puzzle. A small bug from your own backlog, taken through your review and your deployment path, shows how the person reads code they did not write.
  • Read the questions as closely as the code. Good PHP developers ask early about the version gap, the tests that exist and who approves a release.
  • Decide before the window closes. On a one-week trial that means day four, so there is time to raise a doubt and hear the answer while it still costs you nothing.

With us there is no published trial, so the same work happens in a different order. The interview comes first, and if you want proof on your own code before a longer commitment, raise a small paid task on the call. Our developer starts within 24 hours of signing, and the access list above is what that first day needs.

§ 05 · cost

What the platforms charge, fees included

Published PHP rates spread wide because each one counts a different kind of developer. Upwork reports medians from its open marketplace, Arc averages its own screened network, and Proxify prices a senior developer's full-time month. None of them is a quote for your project, and neither is any figure we could print without seeing the code.

PHP rates and fees as each publisher states them, read on 17 October 2026, in the publisher's own currency
SourceFigureWhat it measures
Upwork$15 to $30 an hourMedian hourly rates of PHP developers on its marketplace
UpworkUp to 7.99 percentThe client fee on every payment on the free Basic plan; 3 percent for qualifying US clients who pay by bank account; not refundable
Arc$61 to $80 an hourAverage freelance PHP rate across more than 20,000 vetted developers in its network, all levels and regions
Arc20 percentOf the annual salary, when you hire a developer full time
ProxifyFrom €31.90 an hourIts PHP page; its pricing page showed €5,100 to €8,000 a month for one senior developer at 40 hours a week
UplersFrom $2,500The starting cost it gives for a PHP developer, with no period stated
US Bureau of Labor Statistics$92,650 a yearMedian pay of web developers in May 2025; it publishes no figure for PHP alone

Fees move the arithmetic more than buyers expect. At Upwork's $30 median, a full month of 160 hours costs $4,800, and the Basic plan's fee of up to 7.99 percent adds as much as $383.52 to it; at the 3 percent bank rate the addition is $144. Arc's 20 percent, applied to the BLS median of $92,650, comes to $18,530 for one full-time hire.

Upwork also prints project ranges for PHP work: $200 to $900 for bug fixes and small changes, $1,200 to $5,000 for legacy modernization such as a version migration, and $1,500 to $6,000 for a custom web application or REST API, such as a Laravel or Symfony build. Rates for developers based in India are set out on our page to hire a PHP developer in India.

Read that last band with care. A system with user roles, payments and tests usually costs far more, and our custom software cost section prices a focused first version at $40,000 to $150,000.

We do not publish a rate for one PHP developer. It is quoted after a free 30-minute call, once the hours, the framework and the state of the code are known. To set any quote against another on the same hours, the free development team cost calculator totals a team by role and month, and the software quote checker converts any total into its implied hourly rate.

§ 06 · replacement

If the developer turns out to be the wrong fit

Replacement terms are where the routes differ most. Uplers promises a free replacement within 90 days for a full-time hire and for the life of a contract role. Toptal offers another developer with a second trial, and Proxify ends a contract on two weeks' notice. Upwork and Arc describe no replacement on the pages we read, and we publish no replacement guarantee either.

A guarantee replaces the person, not the context they carried. What makes a swap cheap on any route is what you hold yourself: written decisions, a runbook for deploys, and every account in your company's name. On our builds that means architecture decisions written down, runbooks, and the repository held in your account from the first sprint.

The keys a PHP project carries

PHP projects tend to hold more third-party keys than most, so list them before the first day and keep each one in your company's name, with the developer added as a user you can remove:

  • The Git repository, and the deploy keys or pipeline that reach your servers.
  • Hosting, the database and its backups, and the domain with its DNS.
  • The access keys for Magento's package repository, on a Magento store.
  • Every paid WordPress plugin and theme licence, bought by your company rather than the developer.
  • Payment gateway, email delivery and any other API account the code calls.

Ownership of the code itself is in the contract. Once you have paid in full, our MSA transfers to you everything made for your project, from code to designs and assets, while the tools and libraries that predate it stay ours. A written opt-out keeps the finished work out of our portfolio.

§ 07 · the questions

What to ask the platform, then the developer

Two interviews happen in every hire, even when nobody calls the first one that. The platform or company answers for how the developer was chosen and what the arrangement costs. The developer answers for the code. Ask us the same questions you ask everyone else.

For the platform or company

  1. "Who screened this developer, and what did they test?" A network should name the stages. A company should say whether the person is on its staff or was found for your project.
  2. "What is charged on top of the rate, and is any of it refundable?" Upwork's client fee, for one, is not refunded even when a payment is.
  3. "If this person leaves in month three, what happens to my code and my schedule?" Listen for where the repository lives and how the next developer is briefed, not only how fast one arrives.

For the developer

  1. "How do you know the packages in composer.lock are safe?" Expect the lock file committed, an audit for known advisories on every build, and a plan for a package whose maintainer has walked away.
  2. "Where do the API keys and the database password live?" In environment configuration kept out of the repository and out of the web root. A key that was ever committed to Git should be rotated, not just deleted.
  3. "Our order code has no tests. What do you write before you touch it?" Tests that pin down today's behaviour around the money, in PHPUnit or Pest, written before any change rather than after it.
§ 08 · hiring from us

Hiring from us: three models and the team behind them

The model decides who answers for the result. Choose it by how much technical leadership you already have, not by which monthly figure looks smallest.

  • A developer inside your team. One PHP developer working from your repository and your ticket queue, directed by your own lead. You interview first, and work starts within 24 hours of signing. It fits a company with its own code reviewer.
  • A dedicated team. A team lead, developers and QA take ownership of part of your product, on a monthly bill that normally runs a quarter or longer. Assembling one takes longer than placing a single developer; our dedicated development team page covers it.
  • A fixed-scope build. Two weeks of discovery, paid for separately, produce either a fixed price against a written scope or a recommendation to buy an existing product instead. Our custom software development company page sets out that route.

Our engineers work from Delhi, the engineering headquarters for web platform, backend, mobile, QA and DevOps, and from Lucknow. They keep hours that face New York, and our New York office replies the same day, 9 AM to 6 PM Eastern, Monday to Friday. Our CTO, Divyansh Singh, decides the architecture and holds every engineer to one engineering standard.

On a dedicated team or a fixed-scope build, our QA team tests every build before a preview reaches you. The one-page mutual NDA comes as soon as a scoping call is booked, so nothing sensitive changes hands before it.

The company itself can be checked without us. Clutch shows 5.0 from 66 verified reviews (checked 13 October 2026), and Digital Heroes carries DUNS number 650878346 with Dun & Bradstreet and Tier 1 supplier status on the UN Global Marketplace. The company page names our legal entities and offices, each with a public record you can search.

§ 09 · fit

Situations where a platform beats us

We would rather say this on the first call than after a contract. Each row is a case where another route on this page suits you better.

Five situations in which a platform is a better route than Digital Heroes, and the reason for each
Your situationBetter routeWhy

For anything else, one Laravel developer on an app you already run or a team for a Magento rebuild, the first step is the free 30-minute call. To hire for a whole web product rather than one PHP codebase, see our web developers page.

Where each platform fact comes from

Each page below was read on 17 October 2026. Platform terms and profile cards change often, so check the live page before you sign anything.

§ 11 · questions

Quick answers on platforms, fees and PHP itself

How much does it cost to hire a PHP developer?

It depends on the route more than the language. Upwork's median is $15 to $30 an hour, before a client fee of up to 7.99 percent. Arc puts the average freelance PHP rate in its network at $61 to $80 an hour, Proxify starts at €31.90 an hour and Uplers at $2,500. Toptal and we both quote after a call, once the hours and the code are known. The cost section works through the fees.

Is Laravel still relevant in 2026?

It is. Laravel ships a major version every year, around the first quarter, and Laravel 13 arrived in March 2026 with PHP 8.3 as its minimum and security fixes promised into 2028. Every platform in our comparison lists Laravel developers, and our in-house PHP developers work in it.

Is PHP easier than Python?

For a website, PHP is often quicker to get running, because almost every web host runs it and WordPress or Laravel gives you working pages fast. Many developers find Python cleaner to read, and it is the usual choice for data and AI work. For hiring, the better question is which language your code already uses; we have developers in both, so we recommend whichever your codebase runs.

What is PHP in terms of salary?

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes no PHP-only figure; its median for web developers was $92,650 in May 2025. Toptal's hiring guide, citing Glassdoor for July 2025, gives a US median total pay of $108,000 for PHP developers. Do not set a salary against a contractor's hourly rate directly: an employee also costs benefits, payroll tax, equipment and the time it took to recruit them.

Which platform is best for hiring PHP developers?

The one whose weak spot you can cover. Upwork is free to post on and has the lowest published median, but leaves the vetting to you, so it suits a buyer with someone to review code. Toptal, Arc and Proxify screen hard and publish trials. Uplers publishes a replacement guarantee. A company with developers on staff, such as ours, trades a published trial for an interview, a next-day start and colleagues behind the hire.

Do you offer a free trial, like Toptal or Proxify?

We publish no trial. You interview the developer we propose before you sign, and work starts within 24 hours of signing. If you want proof on your own code first, raise a small paid task from your backlog on the call. If a written trial is a hard requirement, Toptal and Arc publish trials of up to two weeks and Proxify one week.

What happens if the developer is not a good fit?

On a platform, its own terms apply: a second trial at Toptal, two weeks' notice at Proxify, a free replacement at Uplers. With us there is no published replacement guarantee, so tell us as soon as you see a problem. Because the repository, decision records and runbooks sit in your account, whoever comes next starts from documents rather than from memory.

Whose name should the plugin and package licences be in?

Your company's, every time, whichever route you hire through. Buy paid WordPress plugins and themes, Magento repository keys and API accounts yourself, then add the developer as a user. A licence bought on a freelancer's own account leaves with the freelancer, and replacing it under your name later can mean paying for it twice.

§ 12 · next step

Send us the brief you sent the platforms

The fairest comparison is one brief sent to every route: what the PHP application does, its PHP and framework versions, and what has to change first. Send the same brief to Digital Heroes and, after a free 30-minute call, interview the developer we propose. If you sign, work begins on the next working day. Book a call about a PHP developer.
