Hire eCommerce Developers and the team around them
In-house Shopify, Magento and headless developers, with WooCommerce work covered by our Laravel and PHP developers, hired one at a time or as a store team with its own lead and QA. You interview the people before signing, the first developer starts within 24 hours of signing, and the code and every store account stay in your name.
On this page
To hire eCommerce developers through Digital Heroes, tell us which platform your store runs on and what the next quarter of work looks like. We propose one developer or a small store team from our own staff, you interview them, and you sign. The first developer starts within 24 hours of signing; a full team with a lead and QA is usually in place within one to three weeks.
What you are hiring: a store team, not a CV
A store that goes looking for developers usually has a backlog already. A theme that fights every new section, three apps doing the work of one, an ERP that needs orders the minute they are placed, a migration that keeps slipping a quarter. That list is rarely one person's job. It needs someone writing storefront code, someone connecting systems, someone testing checkout, and a lead deciding the order.
So this page is about teams. You can still hire a single developer from us, and they start within 24 hours of signing. But if nobody on your side reviews code, one developer is the wrong purchase, and a small team with its own lead and QA is the safer one. When one person for one store really is the need, our guide to hiring an eCommerce developer weighs freelancers, agency developers and part-time hires against each other.
The roles on a store team
| Role | What they do on your store | When you need it |
|---|---|---|
| Technical lead | Owns the architecture, reviews every change before it merges, plans releases around your sale dates and answers to you for the result | On every team, unless your own lead directs the work |
| Storefront developer | Builds what shoppers see: Liquid sections on Shopify, Hyva or Luma themes on Magento, WordPress templates on WooCommerce, React on a headless front end. Keeps those pages fast on a phone | Design, merchandising and page speed work |
| Integrations developer | Writes the apps, modules and plugins, and the links to your ERP, warehouse, tax and payment systems, from webhooks to nightly imports | Whenever orders, stock or customer records move between systems |
| QA engineer | Tests each build on staging before you see it: checkout with every payment method, discount codes, tax, shipping rules and the phones your shoppers carry | Every team, part time on the small ones |
| Project manager | Runs the board, the weekly demo and the change requests, so the written scope matches what is being built | Larger teams; on a small one the lead covers it |
Our focused teams are usually three to five people, with QA and project communication covered inside the group, often part time. Headcount matters less than accountability, though. One senior person should own your store's code, know why each app is installed, and be on your call every week.
Which developers each store platform needs
Name the platform before anyone names a person, because it decides the skills on the team. Developers already on our staff cover all four stacks below; WooCommerce work goes to our Laravel and PHP developers, since WooCommerce is written in PHP. Each row also gives the first thing a new team checks on an existing store on that platform, since each one has a date or a default that an older store may not have caught up with.
| Platform | What the team works in | First check on an existing store | Read more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify and Shopify Plus | Liquid and Online Store 2.0 sections, Shopify Functions, checkout extensions, custom apps | Conversion tracking on the Thank you and Order status pages. Shopify's deadline to replace old scripts there was 26 August 2026, and stores that missed it were upgraded automatically | Hire Shopify developers, Shopify Plus |
| Magento and Adobe Commerce | PHP modules, Hyva or Luma themes, multi-store, B2B and tax configuration | The version. Standard support for Adobe Commerce 2.4.6 ended on 11 August 2026, and its extended support runs to 31 August 2027 | Magento development |
| WooCommerce | PHP on WordPress: plugins, hooks, subscriptions, B2B pricing | Where orders are stored. High-Performance Order Storage has been the default for new stores since WooCommerce 8.2 in October 2023, so an older store may still keep orders in WordPress post tables | WooCommerce development |
| Headless or custom | React and Next.js storefronts, Node.js services, PostgreSQL on Supabase | Who holds the API keys, the hosting account and the domain, and whether anyone can deploy without the last developer | Headless Shopify, eCommerce development |
Shopify is our primary commerce platform, and we are a Shopify Select Partner. For a single Shopify task, buying Shopify hours in blocks is quicker than staffing a team. Changing platform is a project of its own, covered on our Magento to Shopify and WooCommerce to Shopify migration pages.
Four store team shapes, and the job each one fits
A team is cut to the work in front of it, not to a package. These are the four shapes we staff for stores, smallest first. A store can move between them: a replatform team can become a roadmap team after launch, and a roadmap team can shrink to a care team once the backlog is short.
-
01 · one developer
A developer inside your team
One developer on your platform, working in your repository and joining your standups. Starts within 24 hours of signing. Right when someone on your side sets priorities and reviews code; wrong when nobody does.
-
02 · roadmap team
A team working through your backlog
A lead, one or two developers and part-time QA, taking the backlog month by month: new sections, apps replaced with code, ERP and warehouse links, speed work. It is billed monthly, normally for at least three months.
-
03 · replatform team
A team for a move or a major upgrade
A lead, migration developers and QA for a change of platform or a large version upgrade. It opens with a two-week discovery sprint and then a fixed price for the move: data, redirects, integrations and a planned cutover.
-
04 · care team
A named team after launch
Small changes, app and version updates and incident support once the store is stable. Our smallest retainer is one senior engineer working with one designer. For Shopify, see Shopify maintenance; for other platforms, website maintenance.
Hire eCommerce developers on one of four models
Pick the model by asking who on your side can set priorities and review code. Budget comes second. The models also start at different speeds, and the table shows when each one begins.
| Model | Starts | Who directs it | Billing | Fits when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hourly blocks, Shopify only | A scheduled start within three business days | You, one task at a time | Blocks of hours, with no contract or monthly minimum | One fix or one small change on a Shopify store |
| Developer inside your team | Starts the next working day after signing | Your own lead | Monthly | You already review code and run a backlog |
| Dedicated store team | For most engagements, one to three weeks after signing | Our lead, working to your roadmap | By the month, usually three months or longer | The work runs for months and you have no technical lead |
| Fixed-scope project | After a paid discovery sprint of two weeks | Our team, against a written scope | One price, set when discovery ends | A defined build, migration or upgrade with a launch date |
Discovery can end in a fixed price or in advice not to build at all: when an app or a standard theme already does the job, we name it rather than quote for code. For a whole store priced from its scope, use our eCommerce website cost guide or the Shopify development cost calculator.
What a store team costs, worked from public rates
You will not find a Digital Heroes rate card here. We price one developer or a whole team after a call, when the platform, the roles and the hours are clear. What follows is public data, so that any quote you receive, ours included, can be held against numbers the vendor did not write.
On Upwork, the median rate for both Shopify developers and WooCommerce developers is $15 to $29 an hour. Its levels say more: $15, $33 and $95 an hour for beginner, intermediate and expert Shopify work, and $20, $43 and $125 for WooCommerce. Upwork adds that the figures reflect historical contracts worldwide, and that what a client pays is agreed with the talent.
Firms price differently from freelancers. In GoodFirms' 2026 cost survey of more than 100 software companies, 56.3 percent charged $20 to $50 an hour, a band it links to Eastern Europe, Latin America, Southeast Asia, Africa and South Asia, with e-commerce platforms among its typical projects. Another 10.9 percent charged $100 to $250, the band it gives for the US, Canada and Western Europe.
The third benchmark is hiring your own staff in the US. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual wage for web developers at $92,650 in May 2025. That is the wage alone, before benefits, payroll tax and the cost of recruiting.
One developer against a team of four, per month
| Benchmark | One developer a month | A team of four a month |
|---|---|---|
| GoodFirms, firms at $20 to $50 an hour | $3,200 to $8,000 | $12,800 to $32,000 |
| GoodFirms, firms at $100 to $250 an hour | $16,000 to $40,000 | $64,000 to $160,000 |
| BLS median wage, US web developer on staff | About $7,720 | About $30,880 |
Two things follow from the table. Even at the top of the $20 to $50 band, a team of four costs about what four US web developers earn in wages, before a single benefit or recruiter fee. And a team quote far below the first row usually has a role missing: nobody testing checkout, or nobody reviewing the code before it reaches your store.
To try your own mix of roles, the free development team cost calculator prices a whole team, QA and project management included. The in-house vs agency cost calculator sets staff, an agency and a freelancer against the same hours, with overheads counted.
The first two weeks with a new store team
Your store keeps selling while the team learns it, so the first fortnight goes on access, a written picture of the store and one safe release, in that order. Before you sign, have ready the store login you will grant, the code repository if there is one, read access to your analytics, and the dates of your next three sales.
- Day 1, access. On Shopify you give our lead a collaborator request code and grant only the permissions the work needs; Shopify will not let a partner log in without two-step authentication. On Magento or WooCommerce you give the team a staging copy and hosting access under named logins.
- Days 2 to 4, the store on paper. Platform and version, theme, every app, plugin or module with its monthly cost, how orders reach your other systems, and whether tracking fires on the order confirmation page.
- Days 5 to 7, one small release. A minor change travels through staging, QA and your sign off to the live store, with a tested way back. Nothing large rides on a release path until it has carried something small.
- Week 2, the first roadmap item. A backlog item sized to be finished within five working days, then shown to you in a recorded demo.
- Day 14, a plan in writing. What shipped, what the store audit found, the next four weeks in order and, on a dedicated team, when the remaining roles join.
Look for cheap wins in that audit: an app nobody uses that still bills every month, a tag that fires twice, a theme two major versions behind. You keep the written audit whatever you decide next. For a schedule built from your own figures, the free project timeline calculator converts hours and headcount into a schedule.
Release rules for a store that sells while we work
A broken product page on a Tuesday is an annoyance. A broken checkout on the morning of your biggest sale is lost revenue you never get back. The first four rules below are how our teams already work; the last two are worth writing into any statement of work, with us or anyone else.
- QA before you see it. Our QA team tests each build before a preview reaches you.
- A way back before the first release. A tested rollback is in place before anything ships to the live store.
- A demo every week. Whichever model you choose, every week of build work closes with a recorded demo of the working code, plus a written note of what was delivered and what was not.
- Cover outside your hours. Delhi and Sydney cover production emergencies at any hour, and a message sent out of hours is picked up within one to two hours.
- Write in a freeze. Agree a window around your biggest sale dates when no release goes live, so the code that faces peak traffic is code that has already run for a week.
- Preview first, publish second. Keep theme changes on an unpublished copy and back end changes on staging until QA signs them off.
Five questions for the lead of any store team
Meet the developers, but spend most of the interview with the person who will lead them, because the lead decides what ships and when. Good answers to these five come from having run live stores, and they are hard to bluff.
- "Spend ten minutes on our store. What would you change first, and what would you leave alone?" A strong lead names something specific, such as two apps doing one job, and says which working parts they would not touch.
- "How do you release on a day the store is busy?" Listen for small releases, a staging copy, a time picked from your order data and a way back.
- "Tell me about a migration you ran. What happened to the redirects, the order history and the customer accounts?" Each one needs its own plan, and someone who has done it will say how customers were told.
- "Who checks the work before it reaches us?" Expect a named QA step and test orders through every payment method in test mode, not a promise to be careful.
- "If we part ways, what do we keep?" The right answer lists the repository, the documentation and a handover session, and says the team's logins are removed while the accounts stay yours.
Put the same five to every team on your shortlist, ours included, and compare the answers on one page. The checklist for hiring a Shopify company adds contract questions for Shopify work in particular.
Who you hire, and how to check it
Every developer this page offers is already employed by us: Shopify, Magento and PHP with Laravel, the people who also take WooCommerce work, plus Node.js, React and Angular for custom and headless stores. We do not go looking for people once a contract is signed. This page names no individual developer; the people proposed for your store are the ones you interview before committing.
The code is written in Delhi, our engineering headquarters, and in Lucknow, where full-stack and web developers, project managers and QA sit. Our CTO, Divyansh Singh, heads engineering, and the architecture and the engineering standard are his calls. Our New York office, at 1140 Broadway, holds leadership and US account directors, and no code is written there.
The Delhi and Lucknow engineers keep hours that overlap the New York working day. Write to the New York office on a weekday between 9 AM and 6 PM Eastern and the reply comes the same day. The free time zone planner shows the shared working hours from your own city.
Check the rest without asking us. On Clutch the rating is 5.0 from 66 verified reviews (checked 13 October 2026). Dun & Bradstreet lists the company under DUNS number 650878346, and the UN Global Marketplace lists it as a Tier 1 supplier. For the registered entities and each office, and how to verify them yourself, see our custom software development company page.
Commerce work we can show: SpeedyPrint
SpeedyPrint is a South African online print store, and we built it in 2026. Shoppers design labels, race numbers, stamps and trophies in a browser editor, including print runs where every item carries its own name or number from a CSV file. The store turns each order into proofs and production files, keeps a history of its status, takes payment through PayFast with its webhooks, and sends transactional email.
Behind the storefront sits an admin panel where orders, products, templates and users are managed, split across three roles: customers, admins and production staff. That is the spread of work a store team carries at once: storefront code, a payment integration, back office tools and the testing that holds them together. It is shown with the client's permission. No results figures appear, since none have been cleared for publication.
Our other published client work is on the case studies page.
Who owns the store, the code and the logins
Your store, its code and every account it runs on stay in your company's name. Under our MSA, the code, designs and other assets made for your store are assigned to you once the work is paid in full. Libraries and tools we had built before your project stay ours. A one-page mutual NDA is signed as soon as a scoping call is booked, so it is in place before you share store data.
Shopify builds this into its admin. Our developers join as collaborator accounts, which are Partner logins you approve: you issue the request code, choose the permissions and can remove the account at any time. Shopify will not give a collaborator the Administrator role or ownership of the store, and a collaborator who has not logged in for 90 days loses access automatically.
Magento, WooCommerce and headless stores have no such switch, so set it up yourself. Put the hosting, the domain, the payment gateway, the Git repository and the cloud accounts in your company's name, and add our people as named users. Ending a team then means deleting logins, not negotiating for your own store back.
Your MSA names the party you contract with, either Digital Heroes Technologies Pvt Ltd in India or Digital Heroesco LLC in the US. US agreements usually default to New York law.
When a store team from us is the wrong hire
Five cases where we would point you somewhere else during the first call, instead of staffing a team you do not need.
- One small Shopify job. Buy a block of hourly Shopify help or hire one developer; a team is overhead on a single ticket.
- The store has not proved its demand. If the catalog is simple and the logic ordinary, a standard theme set up well is the better use of money, and we will tell you.
- Every engineer has to sit in the US. Our engineering is in India and Australia; any contract or security rule demanding US-based staff therefore excludes us.
- A platform this page does not cover. We have described Shopify, Magento, WooCommerce and custom builds here. For any other platform, ask on the call before assuming.
- The lowest hourly rate decides it. A staffing shop that competes on rate alone will quote below us.
Anything else, from one Magento developer for an upgrade to a full team for a year of roadmap, begins with a free call of 30 minutes.

Quick answers on teams, starts and costs
How to hire ecommerce developers?
Name the platform and the work first, then choose the model: hourly help for one task, one developer inside your team, a dedicated team with its own lead, or a fixed-scope project. Interview the lead as well as the developers, hold the store and code accounts yourself, and put an NDA in place before any store data changes hands. With us, the first developer starts within 24 hours of signing.
How much does it cost to hire a website developer?
In GoodFirms' 2026 survey of software firms, 56.3 percent charged $20 to $50 an hour and 10.9 percent charged $100 to $250, the band it ties to North America and Western Europe. Upwork's median for Shopify and WooCommerce freelancers is $15 to $29 an hour. A web developer on staff in the US earned a median wage of $92,650 a year in May 2025. We quote our own rate after a call.
What does an ecommerce developer do?
They build and maintain the code a store runs on: the theme or storefront shoppers see, the apps, plugins or modules that add features, and the connections that move orders, stock and customer records to other systems. On a team the work splits between storefront, integrations and QA, with a lead deciding what ships first.
How fast can an eCommerce team start?
One developer is at work within 24 hours of signing: in practice, the next working day. A dedicated team with a lead and QA is, for most engagements, assigned and starting within one to three weeks. A fixed-scope project opens with a two-week discovery sprint before any build work, and a standard Shopify hourly block has a scheduled start within three business days.
Can you take over a store another agency built?
Yes. The team starts by writing down what is there: version, theme, apps or plugins, integrations and anything that breaks when it is updated. You see that written picture first, and you decide whether to keep, repair or replace each part. Ask the previous agency to move every account into your name before the handover.
Do we own the store and its code?
Yes. Under our MSA, work made for your store passes to you on full payment. On Shopify our developers use collaborator accounts that you approve and can remove, and Shopify never lets a collaborator own the store. On other platforms, keep the hosting, domain, payment gateway and repository in your company's name and add our people as users.
Can we add developers before a busy sales season?
Yes. An added developer is a new hire under the same MSA and starts within 24 hours of signing. Bring them in a few weeks before the season, so they have shipped something small before traffic peaks, and agree a release freeze around your biggest sale days.
Do you work on Shopify Plus and Adobe Commerce?
Yes. Shopify keeps its advanced checkout customization for the Plus plan, and our Shopify Plus page covers that work. On Adobe Commerce the team builds modules and themes and runs upgrades. Version 2.4.6 left standard support on 11 August 2026, so an upgrade plan is often the first job there.
