Should you even hire us?

Three hiring models compete for Shopify work: freelance, agency, in-house. Two of them are often better than us, and we'll say so.

Use the decision tree below before booking. It'll save you 20 minutes. Our Shopify Plus Partner status is verified; we're also in the broader Shopify Partners program. Engineering work builds on the Shopify Admin API and Shopify Help documentation. You'll find reviews on Upwork, Clutch, and Trustpilot.

in short
  • Plus Partner-backed senior Shopify capacity: named team in 72 hours, signed NDA before the brief, first commit shipped by hour seventy-two.
  • Three hiring models compete for the work (freelance, agency, in-house), and the decision tree picks the cheapest fit honestly.
  • Task-level scope across 15 common Shopify jobs is published upfront, with the senior hours each one takes (from a 3-hour app install to a 22-hour Checkout Extension).
  • Four tiers (junior, mid, senior, lead) drawn from a 42-developer bench filtered through portfolio, live-code, and paid trial sprint.
  • Four engagement shapes: a single advisory hour, a fixed-scope project, a monthly retainer (20 senior hours), or an embedded full-time developer. Contact for a 48-hour scoped quote.

§ 03 · the tiers

What an expert Shopify developer actually is.

Four tiers. Each one does harder problems. We staff the match, not the maximum.

  1. tier · 01

    Junior

    2-3 years

Installs and configures apps, updates theme settings via admin, edits Liquid in obvious places, handles product CSV imports. Does not touch checkout, build custom sections, or write Functions.
  2. tier · 02

    Mid-level

    4-6 years

Builds custom theme sections on Online Store 2.0, writes Liquid fluently, wires up third-party app integrations, handles metaobject schemas. Can debug production issues. Starts to own architecture decisions.
  3. tier · 03

    Senior

    7-10 years

Ships Shopify Functions (Rust/JS), Checkout Extensions, headless Hydrogen storefronts. Architects multi-store expansions, B2B tiers, Markets setups. Reviews junior work. Default staffing on every Digital Heroes engagement.
  4. tier · 04

    Lead

    10+ years

Plus Partner program access. Owns migrations from Magento / Salesforce Commerce Cloud. Speaks at Shopify events. Sits on the platform's early-access beta programs. Brought in for enterprise Plus engagements and architecture reviews.

§ 05 · task-level scope

Published scope. Fixed quotes.

§ 06 · the vetting

How 15,000 became 42.

The people who work on your store came through four filters. Each one rejects more people than it keeps. Nobody skips a tier.

Fig. 2 · vetting funnel · 15,000 → 42
filter · 01
Portfolio

Rejects ~85%. Must show at least 3 production Shopify stores with named clients.

filter · 02
Live code test

Rejects ~85% of survivors. Two-hour Liquid, Functions, or API problem with a senior observing.

filter · 03
Paid trial sprint

Rejects another chunk. Ten-hour real client task. We pay the developer. Client doesn't even know.

filter · 04
Full bench

42 seniors across 5 cities. Annual re-qualification. Every project draws from this group.

§ 07 · four engagement models

Pick the shape that matches the work.

Four ways to engage. Switch between them as your needs change without re-contracting.

§ 08 · written guarantees

Four things, in writing.

Four written guarantees on every engagement: two-hour response time, 72-hour first commit, scope-doesn't-drift pricing, and a 30-day fix-free quality SLA.

Response time

Two business hours during US/EU/IN overlap. If we miss, the response hour is free.

First commit in 72 hours

After SOW is signed. If we miss, the first week is billed at 50%.

Scope doesn't drift

If scope changes, we flag it and price it before the work. No invoice surprises. Ever.

Quality SLA

Any bug directly caused by our work is fixed free within 30 days of merge. Full stop.

Five quick answers.

Five recurring questions: how fast we can start, freelance vs agency, hourly rates, vetting process, and whether one-off tasks are welcome.

How fast can I hire a Shopify developer?

72 hours from first call to first commit. Hour 0-24: scope and SOW. Hour 24-48: team match and contract. Hour 48-72: environment setup and the first shipped change. Trial sprint billing starts only after you approve the named team.

Is it better to hire a Shopify freelancer or an agency?

Freelance is better for a single task under $500 with a clear spec and a 1-4 week turnaround. Agency is better when work crosses disciplines, when scope is likely to evolve, when you need accountability beyond one person, or when enterprise paperwork is part of buying. Most $2,000+ jobs are cheaper and faster with an agency once you count rework and coordination overhead.

What does a Shopify expert cost per hour?

We don't publish a per-hour rate card. Instead we scope each engagement to a fixed price: a single advisory hour, a fixed-scope project, a 20-hour monthly retainer, or an embedded full-time developer. We do publish the senior hours each of fifteen common Shopify tasks takes, so you can estimate scope before a call, then we send a fixed-price quote within 48 hours.

For market context, senior Shopify work runs $125-$175 per hour at US and UK boutique agencies in 2026 (less offshore).

How do you vet Shopify developers?

Four tiers of filtering. Portfolio review rejects 85%. A live-code test on real Liquid, Functions, or API problems rejects another 85% of survivors. A paid trial sprint on a small real task rejects more. The team you meet comes from the final 0.3%: about 42 senior developers across New York, Delhi, London, Lucknow, and Sydney.

Can I hire a Shopify developer for just one task?

Yes. The smallest tasks (a checkout field fix, a Klaviyo trigger, an app install with configuration) are just a few senior hours. We publish the senior hours each of fifteen common tasks takes upfront. If your task isn't on the list, the first scope call is free and we quote a fixed price before any work starts.

§ 10 · hiring Shopify experts in 2026

What to verify in 2026.

The Shopify expert market split in 2026. Built for Shopify certification became a hard filter for serious Plus buyers. The Plus Partner tier tightened its revenue and engineering-depth requirements. AI-assisted dev raised the floor for freelancers while raising the bar on what counts as real custom work.

Two public checks actually filter out imposters. Shopify's partner directory shows tier (Partner versus Plus Partner) and active client count. Shopify's Built for Shopify spec documents the quality bar a credible engineering team has cleared. If a prospective expert can show neither, you're looking at a freelancer wearing a badge, not an agency with real depth.

Engineering depth verification before contract is now standard. Google's Helpful Content guidance rewards first-hand expertise. That's exactly what buyers look for when they ask to see code. On the Emani engagement, we shipped a working theme-section prototype by day three of the trial week before either side signed. That was the buyer's filter. Code samples, named engineers, and recent commit history beat a deck of past logos every time.

What this means for your project: before signing in 2026, ask for the Plus Partner directory URL, two named engineers with public GitHub or commit history, and a paid one-week trial sprint with a defined deliverable. If any of the three is missing, the relationship is structured for them, not you.

§ · retainer

Buy Shopify development by the hour

Not every engagement needs a project. For in-life work on a store that is already trading, we sell a retainer as a block of prepaid hours: 10, 25 or 50 hours a month, senior engineers only, on 30-day rolling terms.

Unused hours roll over. The SLA is tiered and attached to the invoice rather than buried in an appendix, so response times are a commitment you can hold us to. There is no twelve-month lock-in, no proprietary ticketing system you have to migrate off, and no hours held hostage on exit.

Most brands start on a block, then move to a project when a body of work gets big enough to scope. Plenty run both at once: a project for the build, a block for everything that lands while the build is in flight.
