Shopify SEO, built around the collection page.

Most Shopify stores lose organic revenue in the same three places: collection architecture, duplicate URLs the platform generates for you, and product pages with nothing to index. We fix those first, because they are where the money is.

in short · five lines
  • 01On a store, collection pages carry the commercial keywords, not the homepage and rarely the product page. Most stores under-build them.
  • 02Shopify generates duplicate URLs for you: /collections/x/products/y alongside /products/y, plus filter and sort permutations. Left alone they dilute and waste crawl.
  • 03Apps are the usual reason a Shopify store is slow. Core Web Vitals get fixed by removing things, not by adding a speed app.
  • 04Product schema, review markup and clean internal linking are cheap and most stores still do not have them correctly.
  • 05Shopify SEO is a distinct discipline from generic SEO. The platform's constraints decide half the work.
§ 01 · why it is different

Shopify SEO is not generic SEO.

A generic SEO engagement audits titles, builds content and chases links. On Shopify, a large part of the outcome is decided by platform behaviour you did not choose and cannot fully turn off.

The URL structure is fixed. You cannot flatten /collections/ and /products/ out of the path. What you can control is which version is canonical and which internal links point where, and getting that wrong splits authority across near-identical pages.

Filters generate URLs. Every filter and sort combination is a potential crawlable address. On a large catalogue this quietly becomes thousands of thin pages competing with the collection you actually want to rank.

Themes and apps own your speed. Each app injects script. The store gets slower one install at a time, and nobody notices because it happens gradually.

Someone who has only done SEO for WordPress will audit a Shopify store and miss most of this, because the problems are not in the places their checklist looks.

§ 02 · what we fix

In this order.

first

Collection architecture

Map commercial keywords to collections, build the collections that are missing, merge the ones competing with each other, and give each one real copy above and below the grid.

second

Index control

Canonical policy for product URLs, a deliberate decision on filter and sort URLs, tidy pagination, and a sitemap that lists what you actually want indexed.

third

Speed, by subtraction

Audit every app for what it costs in script weight, remove what is not earning it, defer what is, and fix images and fonts. Measured on field data, not a lab score.

fourth

Structured data and content

Correct Product and Breadcrumb markup, review data where it is genuine, then buying-intent content that links into the collections rather than sitting in a blog nobody reaches.

The order matters. Content built on top of a broken index just gives Google more near-duplicates to choose between, and speed work is wasted if the pages being loaded were never the right pages.

§ 03 · plainly

What we will not tell you.

We will not promise a position. Nobody controls the ranking, and an agency that guarantees one is either buying links or counting a keyword nobody searches.

We will not promise results in thirty days. Technical fixes can move things quickly when the problem was severe; content and authority take a couple of quarters to compound. Anyone compressing that is selling the first month, not the outcome.

And we will tell you when SEO is the wrong spend. A store with a two percent conversion rate and no repeat purchase does not have a traffic problem, and buying more traffic makes the underlying maths worse. Sometimes the honest recommendation is speed, a better store, or retention first.

§ 04 · questions

Six answers.

Is Shopify good for SEO?

Yes, with known constraints. You get fast managed hosting, clean HTTPS, editable titles and meta, robots.txt and sitemaps. What you accept in return is a fixed URL structure, platform-generated duplicate URLs, and a theme and app layer that decides your page speed. None of that stops a Shopify store ranking; all of it shapes the work.

Should product pages or collection pages rank?

Collections, for category terms; products, for branded and model-specific terms. Most stores get this backwards, pouring effort into product copy while the collection that should rank for the category term has a heading, a grid and nothing else. The collection is the page with commercial intent behind it.

What do I do about filter URLs?

Decide deliberately rather than leaving it to the theme. A small number of filter combinations have genuine search demand ("black leather boots") and deserve to be indexable landing pages. The rest should not compete with the parent collection. The wrong answer is having no policy, which is what most stores have.

Do I need a blog?

Only if it links to something that sells. Buying guides, comparisons and sizing or care content earn their place because they answer a question on the path to purchase and can link into a collection. Generic lifestyle posts that link nowhere are a cost, not an asset.

How long before we see results?

Technical corrections can show within weeks when something was actively broken, such as a canonical sending authority to the wrong URL. Architecture and content compound over one to two quarters. We report on impressions and position before clicks, because those move first and tell you whether the direction is right.

Do you need Shopify Plus for this?

No. Every SEO control that matters is available on every Shopify plan, and Google has no idea which plan you are on. If someone tells you Plus improves rankings, that is a sales line. See what Shopify Plus actually is.
