What is Shopify Plus? A straight answer.
Shopify Plus is Shopify's enterprise tier. Same commerce engine, higher limits, and a set of capabilities the standard plans do not expose. This explains what those are in plain terms, and who actually needs them.
On this page
- 01Shopify Plus is Shopify's enterprise plan. Same platform, same admin, same storefront speed. What changes is what you are allowed to control.
- 02The four things it really adds: checkout you can program, native B2B, workflow automation, and multiple storefronts under one organisation.
- 03It is quoted, not listed, and the commercial terms have changed more than once. Any fixed price you read on an agency page will eventually be wrong.
- 04It does not make your store faster, does not fix a weak theme, and does not improve your rankings. Those are separate problems.
- 05The test for readiness is simple: name the Plus feature you would use in the first ninety days. If you cannot, you are not ready.
The plain definition.
Shopify Plus is the tier Shopify sells to larger merchants. It runs on the same infrastructure as every other Shopify store, and a shopper cannot tell the difference by looking.
The distinction is not performance and it is not design. It is access. Standard Shopify deliberately locks down parts of the system, most importantly the checkout, because an unconstrained checkout is where merchants break their own conversion rate and their own compliance. Plus unlocks those parts and gives you the tooling to change them safely.
A useful way to hold it: standard Shopify is a very good product you configure. Plus is a very good product you can also program.
The four things that actually matter.
A checkout you can program
Checkout UI extensions and Shopify Functions let you add fields, validation, custom discount and shipping logic, and post-purchase steps. On standard Shopify the checkout is essentially fixed.
Native B2B
Company accounts, per-company price lists, payment terms and buyer permissions, built into the platform rather than approximated with apps, tags and a second store.
Workflow automation
Shopify Flow runs rules across orders, risk, inventory, customers and fulfilment. This is the feature that quietly pays for the plan, because it replaces work a person is doing by hand.
Multiple storefronts
Several stores under one organisation for regions, languages or separate brands, with wider control over Markets, plus substantially higher API limits for large catalogues.
Shopify moves capabilities between tiers over time. Treat this as the shape of the difference and confirm current entitlements with Shopify before you commit.
Do you actually need it?
Most articles answer this with a revenue number. That is the least useful answer available, because revenue only correlates with the real reasons.
You probably need Plus if: the checkout has to do something it will not do; you sell B2B and wholesale seriously; someone on your team spends hours a week on order operations a rule could handle; or you run more than one storefront or market.
You probably do not need Plus if: you cannot name a specific feature you would use; your main complaint is site speed; you want it because competitors have it; or your actual bottleneck is traffic and conversion rather than platform capability.
That last one is the common case. A brand doing well on standard Shopify with a conversion problem will still have a conversion problem on Plus, and will have added a bill to it.
Six answers.
How much does Shopify Plus cost?
It is quoted rather than listed, and the terms have changed more than once, so any number printed on an agency page has a shelf life. Get a current quote from Shopify. What is more useful is knowing how to evaluate it, which is what our Plus vs Shopify comparison works through.
Is Shopify Plus faster?
No. Same infrastructure, same CDN. Storefront speed comes from your theme, your apps and your images. If speed is the problem, fix that directly with speed optimization rather than changing plan.
What is Shopify Flow?
A rules engine: when something happens, do something. Tag high-value orders, hold risky ones for review, alert on low stock, route fulfilment, segment customers. It is unglamorous and it is usually where the plan earns its cost, because it removes repetitive human work.
Can I sell B2B without Plus?
Yes, up to a point, using apps, customer tags and a locked catalogue. It breaks down when you need per-company pricing, payment terms and buyer approvals together. See Shopify B2B development.
Is moving to Plus a replatform?
No. It is the same store on a different plan, so products, orders, customers, theme and URLs stay put. The work is in rebuilding checkout customisations as extensions, retiring apps Plus makes redundant, configuring B2B, and building the automations that justified the move.
Does Plus help SEO?
Not directly. Google does not know or care which Shopify plan you are on. Rankings follow site architecture, content, internal linking and Core Web Vitals, all of which are available on every plan. See Shopify SEO.
