How to use the YouTube Tag Generator

This generator turns a video title into a ranked list of tags you can paste into YouTube Studio. It breaks the title into its key words and phrases, adds common variations such as tutorial, guide and best, can mix in a genre pack, and stops before the tag field passes YouTube's 500 character limit. It is for creators who want a sensible starting set of tags without typing them one by one.

Step by step

   Type your video title

   Enter the title in Video title. On your first visit it is filled with a sourdough example and the Cooking & Food pack so you can see a result. Tags rebuild a moment after you stop typing.

   Add your own keywords

   Type extra phrases in Extra keywords, separated by commas, for example baking, starter, no knead. Each one becomes a tag and also gets its own variations, such as starter tutorial.

   Pick a category pack

   Choose a genre in Category pack, such as Gaming, Education or Cooking & Food, to add its 15 common tags, ranked after your title and keywords. Any that do not fit go to the suggestions. Choose None, title only to leave them out.

   Set the size and options

   Drag Max tags between 10 and 40; the default is 25. Untick include current year if the year should not be added to phrases, and tick include "shorts" for a Short. Leave keep stopword-variant duplicates off so near repeats like bread at home and bread home count as one tag.

   Edit the list by hand

   Under Your tags, click any tag to remove it. It moves to the front of the list headed More suggestions, click to add. Click a suggestion to add it to the end of your tags.

   Add live suggestions if you want them

   Press Add live YouTube search suggestions to fetch real search suggestions for your title. New ones appear at the front of the suggestions, marked with a sparkle, and you add the ones you like.

   Copy the tags into YouTube

   Press Copy tags and paste the result into the Tags field in YouTube Studio. Copy one-per-line and Download .txt give you the same tags for notes or a spreadsheet. Regenerate rebuilds the list from your inputs and drops hand edits. Clear empties the title and keywords.

Reading the result

• Tags are listed in rank order: the title phrase, then the title without small words such as how, to and at, then two and three word phrases, then variations, single words, your keywords and the category pack.
• Every tag is lowercase, with punctuation removed, and between 2 and 30 characters long. A longer phrase is skipped, which is why the 35 character example title does not appear as a tag of its own.
• The counter under Final tag string shows the tag count and the length of the whole comma separated string. The bar is green up to 450 characters, amber from 451 to 500 and red above 500.
• With the example title and default settings you get 22 tags and 498 / 500 characters. The generator stops adding tags before it would pass 500, so you can get fewer than your Max tags setting.

Tips and common mistakes

• Keep your main phrase to 30 characters or fewer if you want it to appear as a tag. Put the words that matter most early in the title.
• Only the letters a to z and the digits 0 to 9 are kept. Accented letters and other alphabets are removed, so add tags for non English titles by hand in YouTube Studio.
• Read the list before you paste it. Variations such as best or review do not suit every video, so remove the ones that are not true for yours.
• If you add suggestions by hand and the bar turns red, remove tags until it is green or amber again. YouTube will not accept a tags field over 500 characters.
• Tags are a small signal next to your title, thumbnail and description. Use a short honest set rather than filling every character.

Privacy and limits

Tags are built in your browser. The only network request happens when you press Add live YouTube search suggestions: it sends up to four short phrases made from your title to Google's public suggestion service at suggestqueries.google.com and gives up after 8 seconds. Your title, keywords, pack and options are saved in this browser's local storage under dh-yt-tag-gen; your hand edits to the tag list are not saved.
