How to use the Voice Recorder

This recorder captures audio from your microphone using the recording feature built into your browser, and keeps each recording as a take you can play back and download. A timer and a live level meter show that it is picking you up. It suits voice memos, quick voiceovers, interview answers and checking how you sound.

Step by step

1. 1
   Start a recording

   Press Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks. The timer starts at 00:00, a red dot appears, and the level bar moves as you speak.

   Pause when you need to

   Press Pause to stop capturing without ending the take; the timer stops and the red dot disappears. The button then reads Resume. Press it to carry on in the same take.

   Stop to save the take

   Press Stop when you are done. The take appears under Takes with its name, length and file size, and a player so you can listen to it straight away.

   Record more takes

   Press Record again for a new take. Each one is numbered in order, such as voice-take-1 and voice-take-2, and the page sets no limit on how many you keep in the list.

   Download or remove takes

   Press Download on a take to save its audio file. Press Delete to remove one take, or Clear all to empty the list. Neither asks first and neither can be undone.

Reading the result

• Each take shows its length as minutes and seconds, as read from the timer when you pressed Stop, followed by its size in KB or MB.
• The file type depends on your browser. The recorder picks the first one your browser supports from WebM, OGG and MP4 audio, and names the file .webm, .ogg or .m4a to match.
• The level bar shows how loud the input is right now. If it barely moves while you talk, the browser is probably listening to a different or muted microphone.

Tips and common mistakes

• Download every take you want to keep before you close or reload the tab. Takes are held only in this page and are gone after a refresh.
• The recorder uses your browser's default microphone and has no picker. To record from another mic, change the input in your browser's site settings or your system sound settings first.
• If your device is set to reduce motion, the level bar stays still. Recording still works; check a short take with the player instead.
• If another app such as a video call is using the microphone, close it first, or the browser may report that it cannot access the microphone.
• Record a few seconds as a test and play it back before a long session, to check the level and any background noise.

Privacy and limits

Recording happens in your browser. The audio is not uploaded and is not saved anywhere except in the files you choose to download. The page needs a secure https connection and a browser that supports recording; if either is missing it shows a notice instead of the recorder.
