How to use the Video Trim & GIF maker

This tool cuts a section out of a video and saves it as an MP4 clip or an animated GIF. The work is done by a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg that runs inside your browser, so the video is processed on your own device. Use it to clip a moment from a screen recording, shorten a long video or make a GIF for a chat, a README or a social post.

Step by step

   Load a video

   Drop a file on the card that says "Drop a video here", or click it to browse. MP4, WebM and MOV usually work. The video has to play in your browser, because its length is read from the preview player. Its file size, length and type appear above the player.

   Set the trim range

   Under Trim range, drag the first slider to the start and the second to the end. The player jumps to each point as you drag. For an exact cut, type times into Start (seconds) and End (seconds), or play the video and press Set start to playhead and Set end to playhead at the right moments.

   Choose the output

   Under Output, keep Trim → MP4 for a video clip, or press Make GIF for an animation. For a GIF, pick a Frame rate of 10, 15, 20 or 24 fps (15 fps (balanced) is the default) and a Width of 240, 320, 480 or 640 px (320 is the default). The height follows the video's shape.

   Run it

   Press Trim to MP4 or Make GIF. The first run on each visit downloads the video engine, about 25 MB, before it starts. The status line and progress bar show each stage, and the run button and Choose another video stay disabled until the run finishes.

   Check and download

   The Result card shows a preview with the file size. Press Download to save it. An MP4 is named after your file with -trim added, and a GIF keeps your file name with a .gif extension. Press Choose another video to start again.

Reading the status and output

• The line beside Trim range shows your selection as minutes and seconds plus its length, for example Selection: 00:12.50 → 00:20.00 (7.50s). The shortest range allowed is 0.05 seconds.
• For MP4 the tool first copies the selected part without re-encoding, which is fast and keeps the original quality. Because nothing is re-encoded, the clip may not start on the exact frame you picked.
• If the copy fails, the status changes to Re-encoding (precise) and the clip is converted to standard H.264 video with AAC audio. This is slower but cuts exactly where you set it.
• GIFs have no sound, and their size grows quickly with length, width and frame rate. A range longer than 30 seconds shows a warning, but the GIF is still made.

Tips and common mistakes

• For small GIFs, keep them short and start with 10 fps (small) at 320 px. Raise the width or frame rate only if the result looks rough.
• If an MP4 trim fails with a codec message, try Make GIF, or convert the source to a standard MP4 first and trim that.
• The whole video is copied into the engine's memory before processing, so very large or very long files can be slow or fail, especially on phones. Trim long recordings in smaller pieces.
• Changing between Trim → MP4 and Make GIF clears the last result, so download what you need before you switch.

Privacy and limits

Your video is processed in your browser and is never uploaded. The only thing downloaded is the FFmpeg engine itself, about 25 MB of code from the public cdn.jsdelivr.net network, on your first run of each visit. The tool needs a browser with WebAssembly, and some locked down browsers or networks block the engine download. Nothing is saved after you leave the page.
