How to use the Privacy Policy Generator

This generator builds a privacy policy and a terms and conditions page from a short questionnaire. Each box you tick or untick adds or removes prewritten clauses, and the preview updates as you go. It suits a small website, blog or online store that needs a starting draft, which a lawyer should review before you publish it.

Step by step

  1. Fill in the business details

Enter the Business / website name, Website URL, Contact email and Country / region. Effective date starts as today. An empty Contact email or Country / region shows as a bracketed placeholder such as [contact email], while an empty name or URL falls back to Our Website and our website.

  2. Tick what you collect

Under what do you collect?, tick each kind of data your site gathers, such as Names, Email addresses or Payment info. Email addresses, Analytics data, Cookies and Device info start ticked. Each ticked item adds a line to Information We Collect.

  3. List your third-party services

Tick the services you actually use, such as Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, Stripe / PayPal or Embedded YouTube. Each one adds a short disclosure under Third-Party Services. Google Analytics and CDN / hosting start ticked.

  4. Add site features and sections

Under site features, Account signup, Comments and Online store add matching clauses to both documents, and Newsletter adds one to the privacy policy only. Under policy sections to include, untick any section you do not want, such as GDPR rights, CCPA rights or Children / COPPA.

  5. Preview both documents

Switch between the Privacy Policy and Terms & Conditions tabs above the preview. Read the text through, because every clause is a fixed template and says only what the template says.

  6. Copy or download

Press Copy text for plain text, Copy HTML for clean markup to paste into a page builder, Download .html for a styled standalone page, or Download .md for a Markdown file. Each acts on the tab you have open. Reset form returns every answer to the defaults.

Reading the result

  • The line under the title shows the name, URL and effective date. With the name and URL left empty it reads Our Website · our website · Effective and today's date, a quick sign that a field is blank.
  • A Cookies & Tracking Technologies section appears when you tick Cookies or Analytics data, or any of Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, Google AdSense or Embedded YouTube.
  • The Terms & Conditions tab uses Country / region for its Governing Law section. It reacts to Account signup, Comments, Online store, Changes to policy and Contact, and ignores the data, third-party and other section boxes.
  • Downloads are named privacy-policy or terms-and-conditions, with the .html or .md extension. Every copy and download ends with the same disclaimer paragraph shown in the preview.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Only tick what is true for your site. The CCPA section states that you do not sell personal information, and the payment line says you do not store full card numbers, so edit or untick them if that is not the case.
  • The children's section says the site is not aimed at children under 13. If your audience includes children, this template is not enough on its own.
  • Copy HTML gives headings, paragraphs and lists with no styling, so it takes on your site's own look. Download .html is a complete page with its own fonts and colors.
  • The clause text uses British spellings in places, such as personalised, anonymise, licence and enquiries. Change them if your site is written in US English.
  • Update the Effective date whenever you change the policy, then publish the new version so visitors see the change.

Privacy and limits

The documents are built in your browser and nothing you type is sent to any server. Your answers are saved in this browser's local storage so they come back on your next visit, and other open tabs of this page stay in step. Reset form clears the saved answers. This is a template, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions.

Is the Privacy Policy Generator free?
Yes, completely free for everyone. No sign-up, no account and no usage limits.
Is a generated policy legally binding or reviewed by a lawyer?
No. This tool produces a general template for convenience and is not legal advice. Privacy and consumer laws vary by jurisdiction and change over time, so you should have a qualified lawyer review the result before you publish or rely on it.
Is it private? Are my answers uploaded anywhere?
No upload, ever. The generator runs entirely in your browser on your own device, and your answers are saved only in this browser's local storage, they never reach a server.
Which regulations does it cover?
It includes optional sections for the EU/UK GDPR (data-subject rights), California's CCPA/CPRA, and COPPA (children's privacy), plus data retention, security, cookies and third-party disclosures. Toggle each section on or off to match your business.
What formats can I export?
You can copy plain text or clean HTML to the clipboard, download a self-contained styled .html page ready to publish, or download a Markdown (.md) file for your CMS or docs.
Will I lose my answers if I close the tab?
No, your questionnaire answers are saved in this browser automatically and reload when you come back. Clearing site data removes them, and Reset form restores the defaults.
