How to use the Kanban Board

This is a drag and drop task board that keeps everything in your own browser. You split work into columns, add cards with notes and a color label, and drag each card along as it moves forward. It suits solo projects, small team planning on one screen, or anyone who wants a task list without an account.

Step by step

1. 1
   Pick or create a board

   Choose a board from the dropdown at the top. Press + Board to start a new one; it suggests a name like Project 2 and comes with To do, Doing and Done columns. Use Rename to change the board name, or Delete to remove the board after a confirmation. The last remaining board cannot be deleted.

   Set up your columns

   Click a column title to rename it and press Enter to keep the change. Press + Add column to add a new stage at the right end of the board. The cross next to the card count deletes a column and its cards after you confirm. Every board keeps at least one column.

   Add cards

   Press + Add card at the bottom of a column. Fill in Title, which is required, and Notes, which is optional. Under Color label pick Moss, Amber, Blue, Red, Violet or Slate; Moss is the default. Press Add card, or press Enter in the Title field.

   Drag cards as work moves

   Drag a card into another column, or up and down within one, and drop it where it belongs. The target column lights up while you drag, and the new order is saved the moment you drop.

   Edit or remove cards

   Press Edit on a card to change its title, notes or label, then Save. Press Delete on a card to remove it straight away.

   Back up and move boards

   Press Export JSON to download the board you are viewing as a .json file named after it. Press Import JSON and choose a file to add its boards next to the ones you have. It accepts a single board, a list of boards or a full export.

Reading the board

• The number next to each column title is how many cards that column holds, so a long Doing column shows at a glance.
• The colored stripe down the left edge of a card is its label. Each color has no fixed meaning, so decide one, such as Red for blocked, and stick to it.
• Notes appear under the card title with your line breaks kept, so short checklists stay readable.

Tips and common mistakes

• Export JSON saves only the board on screen. Switch boards and export each one you want to keep.
• Card Delete has no confirmation and no undo. Use Edit when you only want to change a card.
• Import JSON adds copies and never replaces a board. Importing the same file twice gives you two boards, so delete the old one afterwards.
• Columns cannot be dragged into a new order. New columns always land on the right, so add them in the order you want them.
• If the board is open in two tabs, a change saved in one tab redraws the other. Close any open card editor in the second tab first, because a card saved from a stale editor can be lost.

Privacy and limits

Boards are saved in your browser's local storage for this site, on this device only. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account. Clearing site data, using a private window or switching browser or device leaves you with an empty board, so export a backup before you do any of those. Import and export read and write files on your own device.
