How to use the Image Splitter / Grid

This tool cuts one image into a grid of equal tiles, such as a 3×3 set for an Instagram profile grid or a strip for a carousel. It draws the image on a canvas in your browser, shows where the cuts will fall, then saves every tile as a PNG. Use it for grid posts, banners split across several posts or simple tile mosaics.

Step by step

   Add an image

   Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF on the card that says Drop an image here, or click it to pick a file. On a keyboard, focus the card and press Enter or Space. The grid controls and a preview appear once the image loads.

   Choose a grid

   Under Grid preset pick 3×3 Instagram (the default), 3×1 strip, 2×2 or 2×1. The first number is columns, so 3×1 is three tiles side by side. Pick Custom to type any number of Rows and Columns from 1 to 20.

   Decide on square cells

   Square cells is ticked to start, and choosing 3×3 Instagram ticks it again. With it on, every tile is a square. Its side is the smaller of the image width divided by the columns and the image height divided by the rows. Untick it to split the image at its own shape, so tiles follow the image's proportions.

   Pick the aspect handling

   Under Aspect handling, Cover (crop to fill) fills the whole grid and trims the overflow evenly from both edges. Contain (fit, pad) keeps the whole image and fills the gaps with transparency. The choice mostly matters when Square cells changes the shape.

   Check the preview

   Preview with grid lines shows the image as it will be cut, with white lines on each seam. The line under it gives the tile count and the size of each tile in pixels.

   Slice and download

   Press Slice into tiles. Each tile appears with its row and column and its own Download button. Press Download all (.zip) to save every tile at once as image-grid.zip. Press Load another to start over with a new image.

Reading the result

• The summary reads like 3×3 = 9 tiles · each 360×360 px, which is what a 1080 by 1350 photo gives with the default settings: the cells take the 1080 px width, and Cover trims 135 px from the top and bottom. The summary puts rows first, so the 3×1 strip shows as 1×3.
• Tiles are named tile-row-col.png, so tile-1-1 is top left and tile-3-3 is bottom right in a 3×3 grid. The small badge on each preview tile shows the same row and column.
• The tool never enlarges the image. With Cover, tiles keep the image's own resolution. With Contain and Square cells, the image is scaled down to fit inside the square grid. Any pixels left over after an even split are dropped.

Tips and common mistakes

• Instagram shows your newest post first, so post the tiles in reverse: start with the bottom right tile and finish with the top left.
• Changing any setting after slicing switches off the ZIP button. Press Slice into tiles again so the tiles match the new grid.
• Keep faces and small text away from the seams, where the white lines fall in the preview.
• Contain leaves transparent bands. Platforms that do not support transparency show them as white or black, so use Cover for social posts.
• Animated GIFs are cut as a single still frame, because each tile is a PNG.

Privacy and limits

The image is read and cut by your own browser. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is saved, so reloading the page clears it. The ZIP is built on the page too, without compression, so its size is close to the total of the PNG tiles. A 20 by 20 grid makes 400 tiles, which can take a moment on a slow device.
