How the math works

Your distance is converted to kilometres (doubled for a round trip), your efficiency is normalised to litres per 100 km, 1 US gallon is 3.785 L, 1 UK gallon is 4.546 L, and MPG is inverted accordingly, and the fuel price is normalised to a per-litre rate. § 03 · how to use it

Five steps, no manual.

  1. Enter your one-way distance in km or miles and tick “Round trip” if you're driving back.
  2. Enter your vehicle's fuel efficiency and pick the unit your car reports, L/100km, km/L, MPG (US) or MPG (UK).
  3. Enter the fuel price per liter or gallon, and set how many people are splitting the cost.
  4. Results update instantly: total cost, fuel needed, per-person share, and cost per km and per mile.
  5. Tick “Compare with a second vehicle” to see which car is cheaper, then hit Copy summary to share the breakdown.

Is the Fuel Cost Calculator free?
Yes, completely free for everyone. No sign-up, no account and no usage limits.
Is it private? Is my trip data uploaded anywhere?
No upload, ever. The calculator runs entirely in your browser on your own device, your distances, prices and results never leave your computer.
Which efficiency units does it support?
All four common systems: L/100km, km/L, MPG (US) and MPG (UK), plus fuel prices per liter, per US gallon or per UK gallon. Conversions use 1 US gallon = 3.785 L and 1 UK gallon = 4.546 L.
How does the two-vehicle comparison work?
Tick “Compare with a second vehicle”, enter Vehicle B's efficiency (and optionally a different fuel price, e.g. diesel), and you get a side-by-side table of fuel needed, total cost, per-person, per-km and per-mile figures, plus a verdict on how much Vehicle B saves or costs extra on this exact trip.
Does it work offline?
