How to use Flashcards

Flashcards lets you build study decks, flip through cards and grade yourself, while a five box Leitner system decides when each card comes back. Cards you know move up a box and wait longer before their next review; cards you miss go back to box 1. It suits students and anyone memorizing vocabulary, terms or facts, and it keeps every deck in your browser.

Step by step

   Create a deck

   Press + New deck, type a Deck name such as Spanish verbs and press Create. The new deck opens in its card manager straight away.

   Add cards one at a time

   Press + Add card and fill in Front and Back. Add card saves and closes the form. Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on a Mac) saves and keeps the form open for the next card.

   Or paste many at once

   Press Bulk add and paste one card per line as front : back, for example hola : hello. The first colon or tab on each line splits front from back, and a line with neither becomes a front with a blank back. Press Add cards.

   Start a study round

   Press Study on the deck. A round holds only the cards that are due now, in shuffled order. If nothing is due, the round uses the whole deck so you can always practice. Click the card or press Space to flip it.

   Grade each card

   After flipping, press Got it (or the 2 key) if you knew the answer and Again (or the 1 key) if you did not. The bar above the card tracks progress, and Shuffle reorders the cards you have not graded yet in this round.

   Finish the round

   Round complete! shows how many cards you reviewed, how many you got and how many need repeating. Press Study again for another round of due cards, or Manage cards to edit the deck.

   Back up and move decks

   In the card manager, Export JSON downloads the deck with each card's box and due date. On the decks screen, Import JSON adds a deck from such a file, or from a plain JSON list of front and back pairs.

Reading boxes and due dates

• Each deck on the main screen shows its card count, a badge with how many cards are due now (or All caught up), and how many cards sit in each box, B1 to B5.
• Got it moves a card up one box and schedules it: box 2 is due in 1 day, box 3 in 3 days, box 4 in 7 days and box 5 in 14 days. A card already in box 5 stays there and returns every 14 days.
• Again sends a card back to box 1 and makes it due at once, so it shows up in the next round you start.
• The label in the corner of a card while you study, such as Box 2, is the box the card is in before you grade it.

Tips and common mistakes

• A card is graded only after it is flipped. Pressing 1 or 2 on an unflipped card just flips it, so you always see the answer first.
• Bulk add splits at the first colon, so a front that contains one, such as a time like 10:30, breaks in the wrong place. Add those cards with + Add card instead.
• Deleting a single card from the card list happens at once, with no undo. Deleting a whole deck asks for confirmation first.
• Reset progress moves every card in the deck back to box 1 and makes them all due, but keeps the cards. It is a quick way to drill the full deck before an exam.
• Decks live only in this browser. Export JSON regularly if the cards matter to you.

Privacy and limits

Decks, cards and review dates are stored in this browser's local storage under the key dh_flashcards, and nothing is uploaded. Imported files are read on your device. Clearing site data, or closing a private window, loses the decks unless you exported them.
