How to use the Event Countdown

Event Countdown keeps a list of dates you care about and shows a live days, hours, minutes and seconds clock for one of them. It counts to midnight at the start of the chosen day, or to an exact time if you set one, using your device's clock and time zone. Use it for trips, launches, exams, birthdays and deadlines, or to see how many days have passed since a date.

Step by step

1. 1
   Add an event

   Press + New event. Type an Event name, pick a Date, and fill in Time if you want to count to a minute rather than to midnight. Press Add event, or Enter in the name field, to save. Cancel or the Escape key closes the form without saving.

   Give it an emoji and a color

   In the same form, pick one of 16 emoji under Emoji and one of six accent colors under Colour. They label the event's card and the top edge of the big countdown.

   Choose which event is shown

   Every event gets a card below the countdown, with the soonest upcoming event first. An event you have just added becomes the one on the big display. Click any card, or focus it and press Enter, to show that event instead. Your choice is remembered on your next visit.

   Share or export

   Copy share text copies the line in the box under the clock, such as 12 days until Goa trip! followed by the event's emoji. Copy all copies every event, one per line, and Download .txt saves the same list as event-countdowns.txt.

   Switch to Big mode

   Press Big mode to hide the event list and enlarge the digits for a TV or a second screen. Press Exit big mode to bring the list back. For a true full screen, also use your browser's own full screen command.

   Edit or delete

   Press Edit on a card to change any detail. Press Delete to remove the event; a confirmation appears first.

Reading the countdown

• Days is the number of whole 24 hour periods left. Hours, minutes and seconds count the remainder, and the clock updates four times a second.
• Each card shows a short form of the time left: in 67d 4h while days remain, then in 3h 20m on the last day, and in 12m in the final hour.
• Once the moment passes, the clock is replaced by Happening today! for the first 24 hours and then by a count such as 5 days ago. Past events sort below all upcoming ones, most recent first.
• The share line follows the distance: N days until, then N hours until, then Only N minutes until, and finally is happening today or was N days ago.

Tips and common mistakes

• Leaving Time empty counts to 00:00, the moment that day begins, so from midnight on the day itself the big display shows Happening today! instead of a clock. Set a time if the event happens later in the day.
• A past date keeps counting up in days ago. It does not roll over to next year, so for a yearly birthday or anniversary, edit the date to the next one.
• The clock uses your device's time zone. For an event in another city, enter the time as it will be where you are.
• Events live in this browser only. Use Copy all or Download .txt now and then as a backup, and add events by hand on another device.

Privacy and limits

Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. Events are saved in this browser's local storage under the key dh_event_countdown_v1, stay in step across open tabs, and are deleted if you clear site data.
