How to use the Currency Converter

This converter changes an amount between 45 currencies using rates built into the page, so it works without a connection. Every pair is worked out through the US dollar, and you can type your own rate for any pair or fetch current rates when you are online. It suits travel budgets, quotes and quick price checks.

Step by step

1. 1
   Enter the amount

   Type the amount in the From box and pick its currency in the menu below it. The page starts with 100 USD, or with the currencies you picked on your last visit.

   Pick the target currency

   Choose the currency you want in the menu under To. EUR is selected on a first visit. The result appears in the green panel at once and the To box fills with the converted amount.

   Convert backwards or swap

   Type in the To box to work out how much of the From currency you need; the From box updates to match. Press the ⇅ button between the two sides to swap the currencies, which also moves the converted amount into From.

   Use your own rate

   The box under the result is labeled with the current pair, such as 1 USD =. Type the rate you were quoted and press Enter or click away to apply it. Reset rate puts that pair back to the built in value, and Reset all rates restores every built in rate.

   Get current rates

   When you are online, press Update rates online to replace the built in rates with the latest ones from a public rate service. The line under the rate box then shows when the service last updated them.

   Copy the result

   Press Copy result to copy one line such as 100.00 USD = 92.00 EUR (1 USD = 0.92 EUR), ready to paste into a message or a quote.

Reading the result

• The panel shows the amount you entered, the converted amount with its symbol and code, and the rate in both directions. With the defaults it reads € 92.00 EUR, with 1 USD = 0.92 EUR and 1 EUR = 1.087 USD.
• The line below the rate box tells you which rates are in use: Built-in rates as of Jun 1, 2024, Live rates with the date the service last updated them, or Edited rates once you have changed one. It turns amber whenever the rates are not the built in set.
• Amounts of 1,000 or more, and currencies such as JPY, KRW, VND, IDR, HUF, CLP and COP, are shown without decimals. Amounts under 1 show four decimals. The number style follows your browser's language settings.
• Quick conversions from lists what one unit of your From currency is worth in up to six major currencies, for a fast reference.

Tips and common mistakes

• The built in rates are approximate and dated June 2024. For money that matters, press Update rates online or type the exact rate your bank or card provider quoted.
• Editing a pair's rate changes the target currency's value against the dollar, so it also shifts every other pair that uses that currency. Press Reset rate when you are done with a one off quote. Reset rate brings back the built in June 2024 ratio for that pair even if live rates are loaded, so press Update rates online again to return to live figures.
• Reset all rates also discards rates fetched online and returns to the June 2024 set.
• Banks and card providers usually add a margin or fee on top of the market rate, so the amount you are charged can differ from the figure shown here.

Privacy and limits

Conversions run in your browser and your amounts are never sent anywhere. Your rates, their date and the two chosen currencies are saved in this browser's local storage so they are still there next time; the amount is not saved. The only network request happens when you press Update rates online, which asks open.er-api.com for the current US dollar rates and sends none of your figures.
