How to use the Chart Maker

This chart maker turns a short list of labels and numbers into a bar, line, pie or donut chart you can save as an image. It draws the chart on a canvas in your browser and redraws it with every edit. It is meant for quick charts for slides, reports, emails and social posts, not for large datasets.

Step by step

   Enter your data

   Under Data, each row has a label and a value. The page starts with five sample months, Jan to May. Type over them, press Add row for another line, or press the cross at the end of a row to remove it. Rows with an empty value are left out of the chart.

   Or paste it in

   Press Paste data, paste two columns from a spreadsheet or a CSV, and press Load data. Tabs, commas and semicolons are detected for you, and a first row whose second cell is not a number is treated as a header and skipped. Loading replaces all current rows.

   Choose a chart type

   Under Chart type, pick Bar, Line, Pie or Donut. Bar is the default. Use Bar or Line to compare amounts or show change over time, and Pie or Donut to show parts of a whole.

   Add a title and colors

   Type a Chart title (it starts as Monthly revenue), or clear it for a chart with no title. Under Color theme, click one of the five swatches: Moss, Ocean, Sunset, Berry or Slate.

   Choose the labels

   Show values prints each number above its bar or point, or a percentage on each pie slice. Legend adds a list of labels, values and percentages beside a pie or donut chart. Both are on by default.

   Export the chart

   Press Download PNG to save a 1800 × 1120 px image named after the title and chart type, such as monthly-revenue-bar.png. Press Copy image to put the picture on your clipboard and paste it into a slide, doc or email.

Reading the chart

• On bar and line charts the scale starts at zero and steps in round numbers. The sample data peaks at 210, so the axis runs from 0 to 250 in steps of 50.
• Large numbers are shortened on the chart: 1,500 shows as 1.5k, and millions and billions show as M and B.
• Pie and donut slices show their share of the total. In the sample, Apr is 210 of 760, so its slice reads 28%. The donut shows the total, 760, in its center.
• Negative values work on bar and line charts and draw below the zero line. Pie and donut charts count them as zero.

Tips and common mistakes

• The chart background follows the site's light or dark theme. Switch the site theme before you export if the chart is going onto a white page.
• Keep labels short. On bar and line charts, labels longer than 14 characters are cut short. With 14 or more rows the labels tilt to fit, and then anything over 12 characters is cut.
• Slices smaller than about 4.5% of the total get no percentage label, so they do not overlap. The legend still lists them.
• A line chart draws the whole line, its points and its shaded area in the first color of the chosen theme.
• If Copy image says your browser blocked it, use Download PNG instead. Some browsers do not allow pages to copy images.

Privacy and limits

The chart is drawn on a canvas in your browser and no charting service is involved. Your numbers are not uploaded and not saved, so reloading the page brings back the sample data. Once the page has loaded, the tool keeps working without a connection.
