How to use the Avatar / Circle Cropper

This cropper turns any photo into a square or round profile picture. You drag and zoom the photo inside a square frame, and the browser draws the framed area onto a canvas at the size you choose. Circle crops saved as PNG or WebP get transparent corners, so they sit cleanly on any background. Use it for social profiles, team pages, chat apps and forum avatars.

Step by step

1. 1
   Add a photo

   Drop an image on the card that says "Drop a photo here", or click the card to pick a file. On a keyboard, focus the card and press Enter or Space. The crop stage opens with the photo scaled to fill the frame.

   Choose the shape

   Under Shape, pick Circle or Square. Circle is the default, and your choice stays when you load another photo. The frame on the stage and the Live preview both switch to match.

   Frame the photo

   Drag the photo on the stage to move it. Use the Zoom slider, from 100% to 400%, or scroll over the stage to zoom in steps of 10%. Zoom keeps the center of the frame fixed, and the photo always covers the whole frame, so you never get empty edges.

   Pick a size and format

   Choose an Output size of 128, 256, 512 or 1024 pixels square. 512 is the default. Then choose a Format: PNG keeps transparent corners, JPG fills the corners with white, and WebP keeps transparent corners, usually in a smaller file.

   Check the preview and download

   The small Live preview shows the exact crop. Press the download button, which reads Download PNG, Download JPG or Download WebP to match the format. The file is named after your photo with the size added, for example photo-avatar-512.png.

   Reset or start over

   Press Re-center to put zoom back to 100% and center the photo again. Press Replace to go back to the drop card and load a different photo.

Reading the result

• Everything inside the white outline on the stage is what gets saved. The dimmed area outside it is cut off.
• For a circle, the photo is clipped to a circle that touches all four edges of the square. The file itself is still square; only the corners are empty or white.
• JPG and WebP files are saved at 92% quality. PNG is saved without quality loss, so it is usually the largest of the three.

Tips and common mistakes

• Pick a photo where the face sits near the middle with some space around it. You can zoom in, but you cannot zoom out below 100%, because the photo must fill the frame.
• Choose JPG only when the site you upload to will show it on a white background. On a dark page the white corners will show.
• Zooming far into a small photo makes it soft. For a 1024 pixel avatar, start from a photo at least that wide.
• Many platforms crop to a circle on their side. If yours does, use Square so it can do its own masking without losing your edges.

Privacy and limits

The photo is opened and cropped by your own browser on a canvas. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is saved by the page; closing the tab clears it. Once the page has loaded, cropping and downloading work without a connection. Only image files are accepted, and the formats you can open depend on what your browser can read. A browser that cannot encode WebP saves PNG data under the .webp name.
