Shopify vs BigCommerce. Enterprise feature parity, scored.
On paper, the two platforms look identical. At the enterprise tier, they split hard. Here is a side-by-side read on B2B depth, multi-storefront, API rate limits, headless reality, and what each one really costs to run.
Shopify Plus wins on app ecosystem depth, Hydrogen, Functions, and partner bench. Pick it for DTC at speed.
BigCommerce Enterprise wins on no-transaction-fee economics, native B2B at Pro, multi-storefront, and higher API limits.
On a 10M USD GMV brand using a non-Shopify-Payments gateway, the annual fee delta runs roughly 50K to 200K USD in BigCommerce's favour.
Both ship comparable B2B depth in 2026. The choice usually comes down to ecosystem, not feature count.
A replatform in either direction runs 12 to 24 weeks. Our Revenue-Safe Replatform method keeps rankings flat through the cutover.
§ 01 · parity matrix
Fifteen enterprise features. Scored without affiliate noise.
The matrix below scores fifteen enterprise features on stock capability alone. Most comparisons score five and call it a day. Enterprise buyers weigh all fifteen, and past 2M USD GMV every row starts to matter. A ✓, ✗, or ◐ means the platform does it with no third-party apps and no custom code.

§ 02 · shopify advantages
Where Shopify Plus pulls ahead.
Shopify Plus pulls ahead on five fronts: app ecosystem, backend logic via Functions, Hydrogen headless, the partner network, and checkout extensibility. BigCommerce technically has all of these too. The gap is depth, maturity, and the engineering hours you save.
edge 01
App store depth (8,000+ vs ~700).
The Shopify App Store is roughly 11x larger. The big names like Klaviyo, Recharge, and Gorgias run on both. The difference shows up in the long tail: niche shipping integrations, regional payments, small-vendor tools. Shopify almost always has one.
edge 02
Shopify Functions for backend logic.
Shopify Functions let you run WebAssembly code right inside checkout. That means custom discount, shipping, and payment-routing logic. BigCommerce's equivalent, scripts via Open Checkout, is less mature.
edge 03
Hydrogen for headless React.
Hydrogen on Oxygen edge hosting is the smoothest headless path on any ecommerce platform. BigCommerce Catalyst is a credible Next.js answer, but it launched in late 2024 and is still maturing. Our Hydrogen and headless Shopify build service walks through the architecture in detail.
edge 04
Partner bench depth.
Hiring a competent Shopify developer is much easier than finding a BigCommerce one. The talent pool is larger and the partner directory is far more populated.
edge 05
Checkout Extensibility maturity.
Shopify's Checkout Extensibility replaced checkout.liquid in 2024. It gives you a stable, app-first surface for custom checkout UI. BigCommerce Open Checkout is flexible, but reaching the same result takes more custom engineering.
edge 06
Sales channel breadth.
Shopify ships native channel integrations for TikTok, Amazon, Walmart, eBay, Meta, and Google, plus localized region channels. BigCommerce covers the main marketplaces well. It just trails Shopify by 6 to 12 months on TikTok Shop and YouTube Shopping depth.
§ 03 · bigcommerce advantages
Where BigCommerce Enterprise pulls ahead.
BigCommerce pulls ahead on five fronts: zero transaction fees on every rail, native B2B at Pro (not Enterprise), multi-storefront in the core product, higher API rate limits, and deeper customer-group flexibility. Run a non-Shopify-Payments rail, and those economics often outweigh Shopify's ecosystem edge.
edge 01
Zero transaction fees on any rail.
BigCommerce charges zero platform-side transaction fees on Stripe, PayPal, Adyen, or Braintree. Shopify charges 0.5 to 2.0 percent on non-Shopify-Payments rails. For a 10M USD GMV brand on Adyen, that saves 50K to 200K USD a year.
edge 02
Native B2B at Pro (not Enterprise).
BigCommerce ships B2B Edition on Pro (~400 USD/mo). Shopify gates native B2B behind Plus (~2,300 USD/mo). Our Shopify B2B development service covers the Plus-side migration shape.
edge 03
Multi-storefront in core.
BigCommerce Multi-Storefront is native: one license, one catalog, and multiple branded storefronts, each with its own theme and channel. Shopify Plus bundles 9 expansion stores, but unifying inventory and orders across them takes apps.
edge 04
Higher API rate limits.
BigCommerce allows 450 REST requests per 30 seconds, roughly 3.7x Shopify's 4-per-second bucket. On Shopify you engineer around the limits with Hydrogen edge cache and GraphQL cost optimization. On BigCommerce you usually do not have to.
edge 05
Customer group depth.
BigCommerce price lists run per customer group, with per-SKU overrides, shipping rules, and tax rules. That goes deeper than Shopify Plus catalogs. For a B2B brand with 4 plus pricing tiers across thousands of SKUs, the BigCommerce data model reads more like a working ERP layer.
edge 06
No SKU variant ceiling.
BigCommerce Enterprise has no hard 100-variant-per-product cap. Shopify caps at 100, lifted only through a Plus metafields workaround. For configurable products with hundreds of options, the BigCommerce data model is friendlier.
§ 04 · headless reality
Headless on either platform. Different shapes.
Both platforms support headless. What differs is the engineering surface underneath. Shopify Hydrogen on Oxygen is the smoothest path to a React storefront, with edge caching on by default. BigCommerce Catalyst (late 2024) is a credible Next.js answer with higher rate limits, but fewer shipped reference implementations to copy from.
Headless framework comparison: Shopify Hydrogen vs BigCommerce Catalyst across stack, rate limits, edge hosting, and ecosystem maturity.
For most of the last decade, BigCommerce led on B2B feature depth, and Shopify caught up through apps. Since Company Accounts landed on Plus in late 2023, the gap has narrowed sharply. In 2026 the choice turns less on which features exist and more on pricing tier and customer-group flexibility.

§ 06 · total cost
Total cost of ownership at three revenue stages.
At the enterprise tier, subscription is the smallest line item. Real TCO is platform fee plus transaction fees plus apps plus engineering hours. The table models all-in annual cost at 1M, 10M, and 50M USD GMV on a non-Shopify-Payments gateway, which is common at enterprise for cross-border routing.
Treat every figure as an order-of-magnitude estimate. Your real number shifts with your app stack and transaction mix.

§ 07 · buyer profiles
Three profiles. Three honest answers.
The decision rarely hinges on a single feature. It hinges on buyer profile, the existing tech stack, and the next 18 months of growth shape. The three profiles below cover roughly 80 percent of the brands we audit.
profile 01
DTC fast-mover, 1M-10M GMV.
Apparel, beauty, food, lifestyle. Heavy on email and paid social. Klaviyo, Recharge, Gorgias, attribution stack day one. Few B2B needs. Aggressive growth.
Pick: Shopify Plus (or Grow if under 2M).
profile 02
B2B-heavy, 5M-50M GMV.
Industrial, distribution, wholesale. 4 plus pricing groups. NET-30 standard. PO upload routine. 5,000 plus SKUs with deep variants. ERP integration mandatory.
Pick: BigCommerce Enterprise (Shopify Plus only if app ecosystem matters more than B2B depth).
profile 03
Multi-storefront global brand, 10M-50M GMV.
Parent brand with 4 plus regional or sub-brand storefronts off a shared catalog. Multi-currency mandatory, multi-language preferred. Different teams per storefront. Legal and tax differ by region.
Pick: Toss-up. BigCommerce Multi-Storefront if shared inventory is critical and per-storefront customization is light. Shopify Plus expansion stores plus Markets if each storefront is meaningfully different in catalog or operations.
§ 08 · migration math
Migrating either direction. The Revenue-Safe Replatform.
Replatforming between Shopify and BigCommerce runs 12 to 24 weeks either direction. The data export is not the risk. The cutover is.
Botch the URL map and 30 to 60 percent of organic traffic can drop. Break the payment route and 1 to 3 percent of orders can fail. We keep both intact with a named method: the Revenue-Safe Replatform.
Pre-launch SEO mirror. Full URL map, 301 redirect plan in staging, title and meta preservation across the top 200 ranking pages, schema parity (Product, Organization, BreadcrumbList).
Shadow store live for 6 weeks. Real domain on a staging subdomain, traffic mirrored, checkouts in test mode, crawl errors monitored daily.
Cutover at lowest-traffic hour. DNS swap during the quietest hour of the week. Order ledger paused 90 seconds; resumed on the new platform.
90-day post-launch monitoring. Daily organic traffic, order count, and checkout success rate vs pre-cutover baseline. Anomaly alerts trigger same-day fixes.
Old platform parked 18 months. Old store read-only behind 301 redirects for 18 months minimum, well beyond Google's typical redirect-equity window.
The full method lives on the Shopify migration page, and it is platform-agnostic. We have run it both ways across roughly 40 replatforms since 2018. That includes Shopify Plus migration work for brands in the 5M to 50M GMV band.
§ 09 · questions
Seven honest answers.
Which is better for enterprise: Shopify or BigCommerce?
Neither is categorically better. The right pick depends on what your brand actually needs.
Shopify Plus wins when you want the deepest app ecosystem, Hydrogen for headless, Shopify Functions for backend logic, and a partner network with real bench depth.
BigCommerce Enterprise wins when you want native B2B at a lower tier, multi-storefront in the core product, zero transaction fees on any payment processor, and higher API rate limits for headless workloads.
Audit your top 5 feature requirements first. Then score either platform against them.
Does BigCommerce have lower fees than Shopify?
Yes on transaction fees, mixed on subscription.
BigCommerce charges zero transaction fees on any processor: Stripe, PayPal, Adyen, or Braintree. Shopify charges 0 percent on Shopify Payments and 0.5 to 2.0 percent on third-party gateways, depending on plan.
Subscriptions track close at the entry level, Shopify Basic at 29 USD a month against BigCommerce Standard at 39 USD. They converge again at enterprise: Shopify Plus from 2,300 USD a month, BigCommerce Enterprise quoted by GMV tier.
For a brand processing 10M USD GMV a year on Adyen, the BigCommerce zero-fee structure saves roughly 50,000 to 200,000 USD versus Shopify Plus on a non-Shopify-Payments rail.
Is BigCommerce better than Shopify for B2B?
On price, yes. On features, they are close. BigCommerce ships native B2B on the Pro tier at around 400 USD a month. Shopify gates native B2B behind Plus at 2,300 USD plus a month.
Since Shopify launched Company Accounts in 2023, the feature sets line up: NET-30 terms, customer-specific catalogs, quote flows, and role-based access at the company level. BigCommerce still leads on customer-group flexibility, with price lists and custom shipping per group.
Want native B2B without paying Plus rates? BigCommerce is cheaper. Already on Shopify? The in-platform upgrade path is simpler.
Which has higher API rate limits?
BigCommerce, by a meaningful margin.
BigCommerce Enterprise allows up to 450 REST requests per 30 seconds and 600 on GraphQL Storefront. Shopify Plus allows 4 REST requests per second with a bucket of 80, plus 2,000 cost points per second on Admin GraphQL.
For headless storefronts pulling product, inventory, and customer data on demand, BigCommerce is more forgiving. Shopify claws some of that back with Hydrogen edge caching and Storefront API query cost optimization.
Read-heavy architecture with good cache invalidation? The gap matters less. Large catalog sync or a real-time inventory layer? BigCommerce gives you more headroom.
Does BigCommerce have multi-storefront like Shopify Plus?
Yes, and BigCommerce brings it in lower on the price ladder.
BigCommerce Multi-Storefront ships on Pro and Enterprise: one license, one catalog, and multiple branded storefronts, each with its own theme, currency, and channel. Shopify Plus includes up to 9 expansion stores, but shared inventory needs apps and is not natively unified.
BigCommerce is cleaner for brands running 4 plus parallel storefronts off one SKU set. Shopify Plus is friendlier when each storefront differs a lot in catalog or operations. For multi-currency at scale, Shopify Markets routes traffic without separate stores.
Should I migrate from BigCommerce to Shopify, or the other way?
Move from BigCommerce to Shopify when you need an app that only Shopify has, or when your team already lives in Liquid and Shopify partner relationships. Klaviyo, Recharge, and Gorgias run on both, but Shopify Functions, Checkout Extensibility, and a thicker apps roster pull weight here.
Move from Shopify to BigCommerce when transaction fees on a non-Shopify-Payments gateway stack into six figures a year, when you want native B2B without Plus pricing, or when you need multi-storefront with tighter shared inventory than expansion stores allow.
Either way, budget 12 to 24 weeks. The /services/shopify-migration/ method covers the Revenue-Safe Replatform we use to hold traffic and rankings through the cutover.
What is the SKU limit on Shopify and BigCommerce?
Both platforms scale into the millions of SKUs in practice. The real bottleneck is variant count, not raw SKU count.
Shopify caps at 100 variants per product on the Standard tier, lifted on Plus via metafields. BigCommerce has no hard variant cap on Enterprise, though very large catalogs of 200,000 plus SKUs slow down without tuning.
For a typical mid-market catalog of 5,000 to 50,000 SKUs, both perform well. For configurable products with hundreds of options each, BigCommerce handles the data model with less workaround. Inside the 100-variant ceiling, Shopify is perfectly fine.
§ 10 · audit before you commit
Audit the platform decision. Before the migration cheque clears.
A 30-minute call plus a written recommendation. Most of our audits conclude "stay where you are". We get paid the same either way.
