How to use the Word Cloud Generator

This generator turns a block of text into a word cloud, where the words that appear most often are drawn largest. It lowercases the text, drops common English filler words and numbers, counts what is left, and places the words on a spiral out from the center so none overlap. Use it to show the main themes in survey answers, reviews, transcripts or an article.

Step by step

   Add your text

   Paste into Your text, or press Load .txt to open a plain text file. The page opens with a sample paragraph already drawn; Sample text brings it back and Clear empties the box. The cloud redraws a moment after you stop typing.

   Set how many words to show

   Drag Max words between 25 and 150 in steps of 5. The default is 90. Only the most frequent words are drawn, and a word that cannot find a free spot on the canvas is left out.

   Filter out short or unwanted words

   Min word length drops words shorter than the setting, from 1+ to 5+; the default is 3+. Type any other words to drop in Extra words to ignore, separated by commas or spaces, such as your brand name.

   Choose the look

   Pick a Font family: Serif, Sans-serif (the default), Rounded, Monospace or Impact. Click a Color theme swatch (hover one to see its name): Moss (the default), Amber, Vibrant, Mono or Custom, which opens four color pickers. Tick Allow 90° rotation to turn every second word in the ranking on its side when it is smaller than 58 pixels, and Solid background to fill the canvas instead of leaving it transparent.

   Export the cloud or the list

   Press Download PNG for a 1920 by 1200 pixel image, or Download SVG for a vector file. Under Top words by frequency, press Copy list to copy the top 50 words with their counts.

Reading the result

• Word size follows a square root scale of each word's count, from 14 to 96 pixels, so the top word stands out without hiding everything else.
• The counter above the text box shows how many unique words were found after filtering. The sample text gives 78.
• Top words by frequency lists the 25 most common words with their counts. In the sample, word and words both appear 6 times and text 4 times.
• Re-layout draws the cloud again with the current settings. The placement is worked out the same way every time, so the same text and settings give the same picture.

Tips and common mistakes

• Plural and singular forms count as different words, as word and words do in the sample. Edit the text first if you want them merged.
• Add words that appear everywhere but say nothing, such as your company or product name, to Extra words to ignore so the real themes show.
• The built in filter list is English only, and letters outside the Latin alphabet are dropped, so text in scripts such as Cyrillic or Chinese will not produce a cloud.
• Leave Solid background off to get a transparent PNG for slides with their own background. The SVG uses the fonts installed on the computer that opens it, so it can look slightly different elsewhere.
• If the cloud looks sparse, lower Min word length or raise Max words. If it is crowded, do the opposite.

Privacy and limits

The text is counted and drawn by your browser on a canvas. Nothing is uploaded or saved, and loaded .txt files are read on your device. Reloading the page brings back the sample text.
