How to use the Webcam Photo Booth

This photo booth takes pictures and photo strips with your webcam. Your browser shows the live camera feed, applies the filter you pick, and draws each shot onto a canvas you can download as PNG or JPG. Burst mode takes several shots in a row and stacks them into one strip with an optional caption. It is for profile pictures, quick team photos, parties and fun at your desk.

Step by step

1. 1
   Start the camera

   Press Start camera and allow camera access when your browser asks. The line beside the buttons shows the size the camera is really sending, such as actual: 1280 × 720. Press Stop camera to turn it off.

   Pick a camera and resolution

   If you have more than one camera, choose it from the Camera list. Choose 640 × 480, 1280 × 720 (the default) or 1920 × 1080 under Resolution (requested). The camera restarts on any change, and it may send a different size if it cannot match the request.

   Set the look and the timer

   Choose a Live filter: None, Black & white, Sepia, Vintage, Vivid, Cool or Warm. Set Filter strength from 10% to 100%. Set the Countdown to Off, 3 seconds (the default), 5 seconds or 10 seconds.

   Choose mirroring and flash

   Mirror preview flips the live view like a mirror. Mirror captured photo too saves the photo flipped the same way; untick it so text behind you reads the right way around. It only applies while Mirror preview is on. Shutter flash effect flashes the camera view white at each shot. All three are on by default.

   Take a photo or a strip

   For one picture, keep Single shot and press Take photo. For a strip, choose Burst → strip, set Shots to 3, 4 or 6 and the Gap between them to 0.5s, 1s or 2s, then press Start burst. Tick Keep individual shots too to get each frame as well as the strip.

   Style the strip and download

   Under the strip options, pick a Strip background (Classic white, Black, Moss green or Cream). Caption on strip prints the text in the box below it, Photo booth to start with, at the foot of the strip; untick it for no caption. Leave Add date to caption ticked to add the date after the text. Set JPG quality from 50% to 100% (92% by default). In the Gallery, press PNG or JPG on a card to save it, Delete to remove it, or Clear all to empty the gallery.

Reading the result

• Each gallery card is named photo-booth followed by a number for single shots, or photo-strip followed by a number for strips, and the download uses the same name, for example photo-booth-1.jpg.
• The size under each picture is the saved size in pixels. Single shots match the camera's actual size; a strip is the width of one shot plus a border, and as tall as all the shots stacked with gaps and the caption.
• The countdown runs once before the first shot. In burst mode the counter then shows 1 / 4, 2 / 4 and so on as each frame is taken.
• If a message says the browser cannot bake that filter into the file, the photo was saved without the filter. In that browser only Black & white and Sepia can be saved into the image.

Tips and common mistakes

• If the camera does not start, check the camera icon in the address bar and allow access, close any other app that is using the camera, then press Try again.
• For the sharpest photos, pick 1920 × 1080 and check the actual size line. If it shows less than you asked for, that is usually the most your camera can send.
• Use PNG for the best quality and JPG for a smaller file to share. Lower JPG quality makes smaller files but shows blocky patches sooner.
• Download the shots you want before you leave. The gallery is not saved, so closing or reloading the tab clears it.

Privacy and limits

The camera feed is shown and captured by your own browser. Nothing is recorded, uploaded or saved by the page, and the camera is switched off when you press Stop camera or leave the page. Camera access needs your permission and a secure https page, and the tool needs a browser that supports camera access, such as a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
