A typing test without the ad-tech

Pick a length — 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds — or choose Passage for an untimed drill, click the text and type. The timer starts on your first keystroke, every character is graded live (green correct, red wrong), and backspacing re-grades the whole line so corrections count fairly. When time runs out you get net WPM, raw WPM, accuracy, error counts and a consistency score based on how steady your speed stayed. Your best score lives in this browser only — no account, nothing uploaded, free forever.

§ 02 · what you can do

Everything a typing test should measure.

  • Measure your WPM with timed tests of 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds — or type a full passage untimed.
  • Watch live per-character highlighting: green for correct, red for errors, with a cursor that follows you and auto-scrolls.
  • Track accuracy and errors precisely — the results split correct and incorrect characters, and backspace corrections are re-graded fairly.
  • See net vs raw WPM: net counts only correct keystrokes, raw counts everything — the gap shows how costly your mistakes were.
  • Check your consistency — speed is sampled every second and scored on how steady your pace stayed.
  • Keep a best score saved locally on this device, with a “New best!” flag every time you beat it.
§ 03 · how to use it

Five steps, no warm-up.

  1. Choose a test length (15s, 30s, 60s or 120s) or select Passage for an untimed run.
  2. Click the text area and start typing — the timer starts on your first keystroke.
  3. Watch the live WPM, accuracy and error counts update as you type. Green characters are correct, red are errors.
  4. When the timer hits zero (or you finish the passage), the full results appear: net WPM, raw WPM, accuracy, errors and consistency.
  5. Hit Restart (same) to retry the same passage, or New passage for a fresh one.
§ 04 · faq

Frequently asked questions.

Is the Typing Speed Test free?
Yes — completely free for everyone. No sign-up, no account and no usage limits.
How is WPM calculated?
The standard formula: correct characters typed, divided by 5 (the average word length), divided by elapsed minutes. The live stat updates every 200ms while the test runs, and the final result shows both net WPM (correct keystrokes only) and raw WPM (all keystrokes including errors).
Is my typing data uploaded anywhere?
No. The test runs entirely in your browser. Your best score is stored in your browser's local storage on your own device — nothing is sent to any server.
Does it work offline?
Yes — once the page has loaded, the whole test keeps working without a connection, because every keystroke is graded locally.
What is the consistency score?
Consistency measures how steady your WPM stayed throughout the test. The tool samples your speed roughly every second and calculates the coefficient of variation — 100% means a perfectly even pace, and higher is better.
What is the difference between net WPM and raw WPM?
Net WPM counts only correct characters and is the standard measure of useful typing speed. Raw WPM counts every keystroke including errors, so it is always equal to or higher than net WPM — a large gap between them means many mistakes were made.
