How to use the X / Tweet Preview

This tool counts a post the way X does, shows it as a post card in light or dark mode, and splits long drafts into a numbered thread. Links count as 23 characters whatever their length, and most emoji and Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters count as 2. It is for anyone drafting posts or threads for X who wants to check the length and the look before posting.

Step by step

   Write or paste your draft

   Type into the Compose box. The counter beside it shows how many of the 280 characters are left, and the ring fills as you type. Press Copy text to copy the draft as it is.

   Check the live preview

   The Live preview card on the right shows the post as you type, with links, #hashtags and @mentions highlighted. Switch between Light and Dark to see it in both themes.

   Set the preview details

   Under Preview details, replace the Display name and Handle with your own (an @ is added if you leave it out) and change the Time label. Fill in Replies, Reposts and Likes to show engagement numbers on the card, or leave them blank to hide them.

   Split a long draft into a thread

   Leave add (1/n) numbering ticked to number each post, or untick it for none. Press Split into thread. The tool breaks the text at sentence ends where it can, then between words, so each post stays within 280.

   Edit the thread

   Each post in the Thread card is its own box with a counter, so you can move a sentence or shorten a line. Pressing Split into thread again rebuilds the thread from the Compose box and replaces your edits.

   Copy or save the thread

   Press Copy on a single post to paste it into X one at a time, Copy whole thread to copy every post separated by a blank line, or Download .txt to save the thread as thread.txt.

Reading the result

• The counter reads N left while you are under the limit and N over when you pass it. The ring turns amber above 260 and red above 280.
• A link always costs 23, so Check https://example.com/a/very/long/path today counts as 35 and shows 245 left.
• In the thread, each post shows a counter such as 212 / 280, and the Thread heading shows how many posts the draft became.
• Numbering is added only when the draft needs more than one post, in the form (1/3), (2/3), (3/3). The splitter keeps 9 characters free in each post for it.

Tips and common mistakes

• Paste the full link you will post. Its length does not matter, because every link counts as 23.
• This tool counts each part of a combined emoji separately, so a flag emoji counts 4 here. X may count it as less, so treat the number as a safe upper bound.
• The preview shows the Compose box text only. To preview a single post from the thread, paste it into Compose.
• If the splitter breaks a thought in an odd place, end your sentences with a period or add line breaks where you want the posts to divide, then split again.
• Engagement numbers of 1,000 or more are shortened on the card, so 1500 shows as 1.5K and 2000000 as 2M.

Privacy and limits

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is posted to X or sent anywhere, and nothing is saved, so reloading the page clears your draft. Copy your text before you leave the page.
