A note on saving audio

Web Speech plays through your system's voices locally, nothing is uploaded. The browser's speech API only plays audio; it doesn't expose a way to capture it to a file, so there's no download here (we won't fake one). If you need an audio file, use a screen or audio recorder while it plays.

How to use the Text to Speech tool

This tool reads text aloud with the voices your browser and operating system provide, through the Web Speech API. You choose a voice, set the rate, pitch and volume, and follow a highlight that moves word by word in the preview. It suits proofreading by ear, listening to notes, language practice and checking how copy sounds.

Step by step

  1. Enter the text

    Type or paste into Text to read, replacing the sample sentence. The counter below the box shows the number of characters.

  2. Choose a voice

    Open Voice and pick from the voices your device offers, grouped by language code such as en-US. The browser's default voice is marked default and is selected at first.

  3. Adjust rate, pitch and volume

    Set Rate from 0.5× to 2× and Pitch from 0 to 2, both in steps of 0.1 and starting at 1.0. Set Volume from 0 to 100% in steps of 5. New settings apply the next time you press Speak.

  4. Play it

    Press Speak to start reading. Pause holds the speech where it is, Resume carries on from there, and Stop ends it.

  5. Follow along

    Watch the Live preview. With Highlight as it reads ticked, the word being spoken is marked and kept in view. Untick it to show the plain text only.

Reading the preview

  • Before you press Speak, the preview shows your text in gray. While it plays, the text turns bright and the current word is highlighted.
  • The highlight moves only when the selected voice reports word positions to the browser. If you hear speech but the highlight stays still, that voice does not report them; try another voice.

Tips and common mistakes

  • To hear a new rate, pitch, volume or voice, press Stop and then Speak again. A reading in progress keeps the settings it started with.
  • The voices come from your system, not from the page. Install more language voices in your operating system settings and reload the page to see them in the list.
  • There is no audio download, because the browser speaks the text without giving the page a recording. Use a screen or audio recorder while it plays if you need a file.
  • Pick a voice that matches the language of the text. A voice set for another language reads the words with its own pronunciation rules.

Privacy and limits

Your text is never sent to this site. Speech is produced by the voices your browser and operating system provide. Most are installed on the device, but some browsers also list online voices, such as the Chrome voices whose names start with Google, which may send the text to that provider to be spoken. Nothing is saved.

Frequently asked questions.

Is Text to Speech free?
Yes, completely free for everyone. No sign-up, no account and no usage limits.
Is it private? Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No upload, ever. The tool runs entirely in your browser and uses your device's own voices, your text never leaves your computer.
Does it work offline?
Yes, once the page has loaded, reading works without a connection, because the system voices and all logic run locally on your device.
Can I download the audio as an MP3 or WAV file?
No. The browser's Web Speech API only plays audio through your system, it doesn't expose a way to capture that audio to a file. If you need a recording, use a screen or audio recorder while the text plays.
Why don't I see many voices, or none at all?
The available voices come from your operating system and browser, not from us. Install additional language or accessibility voices in your OS settings, then reload the page, they'll appear in the dropdown grouped by language.
Do I need to install anything or create an account?
No. Just open the page and start using it. There's nothing to install and no account to create, the reader uses voices your device already has.
