How to use the Subscription Tracker

The Subscription Tracker lists your recurring charges and converts each one to a monthly and a yearly cost, whatever its billing cycle. It shows the totals, the renewals due in the next 30 days and a chart of monthly spend by category. It is for anyone who wants to see what streaming, software, gym and other subscriptions really cost, without linking a bank account.

Step by step

1. 1
   Add a subscription

   Press + Add subscription. Fill in Name and Cost, choose a Billing cycle (Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly or Yearly) and a Category from the ten offered, then press Add. Enter in the name or cost field also saves.

   Set the renewal date

   Next renewal is optional. Set it to the next charge date and the subscription appears under Upcoming renewals when it falls within 30 days. A date in the past is rolled forward by whole cycles to the next charge.

   Pick a color if you like

   Colour is optional too. The chosen swatch marks the subscription in the list and in Upcoming renewals.

   Check the totals

   The three tiles at the top show Per month, Per year and the number of Subscriptions. They update as soon as you save, edit or delete an entry.

   Choose currency and sort order

   Use the currency menu (it starts on $ USD) to change the symbol shown on every amount, and the sort menu to order All subscriptions by Sort: cost (high → low), Sort: next renewal or Sort: name. Both choices are remembered.

   Edit, delete or export

   Use the pencil on a row to edit it and the cross to delete it after a confirmation. Press Export CSV to download subscriptions.csv in the current sort order.

Reading the numbers

• Every cost is converted to a monthly figure: weekly × 52 ÷ 12, monthly × 1, quarterly ÷ 3 and yearly ÷ 12. A 120 yearly plan counts as 10.00 a month, and a 5 weekly charge as 21.67 a month.
• Per year uses weekly × 52, monthly × 12, quarterly × 4 and yearly × 1. With just those two entries, Per month reads 31.67 and Per year 380.00.
• Each row shows the price you entered, its monthly equivalent and, if set, the next renewal date. Rows renewing within 30 days are tinted, and the date turns red when it is three days away or less.
• Spend by category is a donut of normalized monthly cost per category, largest first, with the monthly total in the middle and each category's amount and share in the legend. Chart colors go by each category's rank in spend, not the colors you picked for rows.

Tips and common mistakes

• The currency menu changes the symbol only. It does not convert amounts, so enter every subscription in the same currency.
• The CSV includes Monthly equiv and Yearly equiv columns and is the easiest backup. The tracker cannot import it back, so keep it as a record rather than a restore file.
• Sort: cost orders by the monthly equivalent, so an expensive yearly plan can rank below a cheaper monthly one.
• Subscriptions without a renewal date never appear under Upcoming renewals and go to the bottom of Sort: next renewal.

Privacy and limits

Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Subscriptions are saved in this browser's local storage under dh_subscriptions, and the currency and sort choices under dh_subscriptions_pref. Changes to the list show up in other open tabs of this page, and both keys are deleted if you clear site data.
