How to use the Percentage Calculator

This calculator answers five everyday percentage questions: X% of a number, what percent one number is of another, the change between two values, a discounted price and adding or removing tax. Each tab uses the right formula for its case and updates as you type. Use it for shopping, invoices, reports and homework.

Step by step

   Pick a tab

   Choose X% of Y, X is what % of Y, % increase / decrease, Discount or Tax / VAT. The fields show example numbers in gray until you type your own, and there is no button to press.

   Find a percent of a number

   On X% of Y, enter X (percent) and Y (value). With 15 and 200 the answer is 30.

   Compare two numbers

   On X is what % of Y, enter X (value) and Y (value). With 30 and 200 the answer is 15.00%. The second value cannot be zero.

   Measure a change

   On % increase / decrease, enter From (original) and To (new). Going from 200 to 250 shows Increase +25.00%, with the plain difference of 50 in the sentence below.

   Price a discount

   On Discount, enter the Original price and the Discount %. A 25% discount on 100 shows You pay $75.00 and You save $25.00.

   Add or remove tax

   On Tax / VAT, press Add tax to price or Remove tax from price, then enter the price and the Tax / VAT rate %. Adding 20% to 100 gives $120.00. Removing 20% from 120 gives $100.00 before tax, not $96.

   Set the currency

   On the Discount and Tax / VAT tabs, choose a symbol under Currency for money tools. It only changes the symbol, with no exchange rate, and it is remembered in this browser.

Reading the result

• Every tab shows a large answer, and the sentence under it repeats the calculation in words, so you can see which formula was used.
• Percentage change is measured against the original value: the new value minus the original, divided by the original, times 100. So 200 to 250 is +25%, but 250 back to 200 is a 20% decrease.
• Remove tax divides by 1 plus the rate. A price of 120 with 20% tax holds 100 before tax and 20 of tax, because the tax is 20% of the net price, not of the total.
• Money results show 2 decimal places and percentages show 2. Plain number results show up to 4 decimal places.

Tips and common mistakes

• A move from 10% to 15% is 5 percentage points but a 50% change. The % increase / decrease tab always gives the relative change.
• Two discounts in a row do not add up. 20% off and then 10% off is 28% off, not 30%, so run the second discount on the first result.
• The Discount tab does not stop you entering more than 100%, which gives a negative price. Check the input if the result looks wrong.
• Negative numbers work on the first three tabs. Prices, discounts and tax rates cannot be negative.

Privacy and limits

Every calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere. The only thing saved is your currency choice, kept in this browser's local storage under dh_pc_cur. Your numbers are not stored and clear when you reload.
