How to use the PDF to Images converter

This converter turns every page of a PDF into a PNG or JPG image. It draws each page with the pdf.js library at 1×, 2× or 3× the page's own size, shows the pages as thumbnails, and lets you download one page or all of them as a ZIP. It is for anyone who needs PDF pages as images for slides, social posts, websites or documents that do not accept PDF.

Step by step

   Add your PDF

   Drop a PDF on the area that says Drop a PDF here, or click it to browse. On a keyboard, focus the area and press Enter. Every page renders straight away with the default settings: 2× and PNG.

   Choose the resolution

   Under Resolution, pick 1× for on-screen previews, 2× as a sharp all-around default, or 3× for the most detail and print. The multiplier is applied to the page's own size, so higher values give larger images and larger files.

   Choose the format

   Under Format, pick PNG for crisp text and line drawings, or JPG for smaller files, which suits pages that are mostly photos. With JPG selected, drag JPG quality between 50% and 100% (default 90%).

   Render again after a change

   Resolution only takes effect when the pages are drawn, so press Re-render after you change it. Format and JPG quality are applied when you download, so they work without a re-render; re-rendering just updates the summary line.

   Download the images

   Press Download under any thumbnail to save that page, or press Download all (.zip) to save every page in one ZIP file. Press Clear to remove the PDF and start again with another file.

Reading the result

• The summary line above the thumbnails shows the page count, format and resolution of the last render, for example 12 pages · PNG · 2×.
• Under each thumbnail you see the page number and its exact size in pixels. A US Letter page is 612 by 792 points, so it renders at 612×792 at 1×, 1224×1584 at 2× and 1836×2376 at 3×.
• Single pages are saved as yourfile-page-01.png and so on, with zeros added in front when the PDF has 10 or more pages, so the files sort in order. The ZIP is saved as yourfile-images.zip.
• While pages render, a progress bar shows which page is being drawn, for example Rendering page 3 of 12.

Tips and common mistakes

• For text-heavy pages that people will zoom into or print, use 2× or 3× with PNG. For quick previews or web thumbnails, 1× is usually enough.
• At 3×, long PDFs take longer and use a lot of memory, because every page is kept in the browser at full size. Convert very long documents in parts if your browser slows down.
• Download all (.zip) only works once rendering has finished. If it says the tool is still rendering, wait for the progress bar to disappear and press it again.
• A password-protected PDF will not render, because the tool has no way to enter the password. Remove the password in your PDF reader first.
• If you drop several files at once, only the first PDF is used.

Privacy and limits

Your PDF is read and drawn by your own browser using pdf.js and zipped with JSZip, both served from this site. The file is never uploaded and nothing is saved; pressing Clear or closing the tab removes it from memory.
