Frequently asked questions.

Is the Compress PDF tool free?
Yes — completely free for everyone. No sign-up, no account and no usage limits.
Is it private? Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No upload, ever. The whole thing runs in your browser on your own device — your PDF never leaves your computer and nothing is sent to a server.
Does it work offline?
Yes — once the page and its compression libraries have loaded, everything happens locally, so it keeps working without a connection.
What is the difference between Recompress and Optimize?
Recompress rasterises each page to a JPEG image and rebuilds the PDF. This gives the biggest savings, but the text is no longer selectable or searchable. Optimize losslessly re-saves the file structure, giving a modest saving while keeping text, fonts and vectors fully intact.
Why did my file barely shrink in Optimize mode?
Optimize only re-packs the PDF's structure without touching image data, so an already well-compressed file has little to gain. If you need a big reduction, switch to Recompress mode and lower the JPEG quality — the tool will tell you when a file is already tightly compressed.
Do I need to install anything or create an account?
No. Just open the page and start compressing — there is no software to install and no account to create.
