Redaction that actually destroys the data

A black rectangle drawn in a document editor, or a CSS overlay, can often be lifted to reveal what's underneath. This tool rewrites the actual pixels: blur and pixelate are re-sampled from the source and drawn back over the region, black-out paints a solid color, and the whole image is flattened into a brand-new PNG on export. The original never leaves your device and the redacted areas can't be recovered from the download.

§ 02 · what you can do

Everything a redactor should do.

  • Blur faces and names in screenshots before you share them publicly.
  • Pixelate account numbers, passwords or any text you need to hide, with an adjustable block size.
  • Black out entire regions with a solid color block of your choice for maximum coverage.
  • Stack multiple regions in one image, each keeping the effect it was drawn with; undo or remove any of them individually.
  • Export a flat, redacted PNG where the hidden areas are baked into the pixels, not just covered by a removable layer.
  • Process images privately: nothing is uploaded, no account is needed, and it keeps working offline.
§ 03 · how to use it

Five steps, no manual.

  1. Drop or browse a JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF. The file loads straight into your browser and never leaves your device.
  2. Choose an effect , Blur, Pixelate or Black-out , and set the strength slider (or the block color for black-out).
  3. Drag a box over each region you want to hide. Each region keeps the effect and strength it was drawn with.
  4. Undo, remove or clear regions from the list until the redaction looks right.
  5. Click Download redacted PNG , the hidden areas are baked into the pixels of a new flat image.

Frequently asked questions.

Is the Image Redactor free?
Yes , completely free for everyone. No sign-up, no account and no usage limits.
Is it private? Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No upload, ever. The redactor runs entirely in your browser on your own device, so your image never leaves your computer and nothing is sent to a server.
Can the blurred or blacked-out areas be recovered?
No. Unlike a black box pasted over a PDF or a CSS overlay, this tool rewrites the actual pixels and flattens the whole image into a new PNG on export. There is no separate layer to peel back, so the hidden content is genuinely gone.
What's the difference between blur, pixelate and black-out?
Blur softens the region so shapes are still hinted at; pixelate replaces it with coarse mosaic blocks; black-out paints a solid color over it. For anything genuinely sensitive , account numbers, faces, IDs , black-out or a strong pixelate is safest, since light blur can sometimes be partly reversed.
What image formats can I use, and what do I get back?
You can load JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF. The redacted result always downloads as a flat PNG, which preserves the redaction crisply and strips any animation or original metadata.
Does it work offline?
Yes , once the page has loaded, loading an image, drawing regions and exporting all work without a connection, because every step runs locally in your browser.
