How to use the Image Converter

The Image Converter changes images between PNG, JPG and WebP, one file or a whole batch at a time. Your browser decodes each image, draws it onto a canvas and saves it again in the format you choose. It is for anyone who needs a different file type for a website, a form upload or an email, without installing software.

Step by step

   Add your images

   Drop one or more files on the card that says Drop images here, or click it to pick them. PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP files are accepted. On a keyboard, focus the card and press Enter. The settings and previews appear once the files load.

   Choose the output format

   Pick PNG (lossless), JPG (smallest) or WebP (modern) under Convert to. PNG is selected first. Every image in the batch is converted again whenever you change a setting.

   Set the quality

   For JPG and WebP, drag the Quality slider between 10 and 100 percent. It starts at 90. Lower values make smaller files with softer detail. The slider is turned off for PNG, which is lossless.

   Pick a background for JPG

   JPG cannot store transparency, so when JPG is selected a Background (for transparency) menu appears. Choose White or Black, and see-through areas are filled with that color. PNG and WebP keep transparency, so the menu is hidden for them.

   Download the results

   Press Download under any preview to save that one image, or Download all (.zip) to save the whole batch as dh-converted.zip. Each file keeps its original name with the new extension. Press Clear to remove every image and start again.

Reading the result

• Each preview card shows the start of the file name, the change of format such as PNG to JPG, and the file size before and after conversion in B, KB or MB.
• The line next to Clear adds up the batch: how many images, their total size before and their total size after conversion.
• A file that grows is normal when you convert a compressed JPG or WebP to PNG, because PNG keeps every pixel exactly. Choose JPG or WebP when the goal is a smaller file.

Tips and common mistakes

• For photos, try WebP or JPG at 75 to 85 and compare the preview with the original. Many photos look the same at a fraction of the size.
• Keep logos, screenshots and images with text or sharp edges in PNG or WebP. JPG blurs hard edges and cannot keep a transparent background.
• An animated GIF becomes a still image, because the canvas only captures one frame.
• Converting saves the pixels only, so metadata such as camera EXIF details is not carried into the new file. Keep your originals if you need it.
• If your browser cannot write WebP, it hands back a PNG instead, which shows up as a much larger file than expected and is still saved with a .webp name. Try another browser if that happens.

Privacy and limits

Images are decoded and converted by your own browser and are never uploaded, so the tool keeps working without a connection once the page has loaded. Nothing is saved after you leave. There is no set limit on size or count, but every image is held in memory while you work, so very large batches can slow a phone or older computer.
