How to use the Image Annotator

This annotator lets you mark up a screenshot or photo with arrows, boxes, text, numbered step badges, a highlighter and blur or pixelate regions. Every mark stays a separate object you can move, restyle or delete until you export, and the export draws them onto a full-resolution copy of the image. It is for anyone writing bug reports, how-to guides, support replies or redacting details before sharing a screenshot.

Step by step

  1. Load an image

    Drop an image on the card that says Drop an image here, click it to browse, or press Ctrl+V to paste a screenshot from your clipboard. The toolbar and the image appear as soon as it loads, fitted to the frame.

  2. Draw shapes and lines

    Pick a tool from the toolbar; hover an icon to see its name. Arrow (A), Line (L), Rectangle (R), Ellipse (O), Freehand pen (P) and Highlighter (H) all work by dragging on the image. Hold Shift to snap lines to 45 degree steps and to make squares and circles.

  3. Set color, width and fill

    Click one of the seven Color swatches or use Custom color. Drag Width between 1 and 60; its starting value is scaled to the image size. Tick Fill to add a light tint inside rectangles and ellipses. The highlighter draws at three times the width and is see-through.

  4. Add text and numbered badges

    With Text (T), click where the label should start and type. Press Ctrl+Enter or Escape, or click elsewhere, to finish. With Numbered step badge (N), each click drops the next number, starting at 1. Font px (8 to 400) sets the size of new text and badges.

  5. Hide sensitive details

    Choose Blur / pixelate region (B) and drag a box over an email, token or face. Pick Pixelate and set Cell px (3 to 120), or pick Blur and set Strength (2 to 80). Larger values hide more.

  6. Edit, move or remove marks

    Switch to Select / Move (V), click a mark to select it and drag to move it. Changing the color, width or font while a mark is selected restyles it. Double-click a text label to edit its words. Use Delete selected (or the Del key), Undo (Ctrl+Z), Redo (Ctrl+Y) or Clear all annotations.

  7. Crop and zoom

    Choose Crop image (C), drag the area to keep and press Apply crop, or Cancel. Use Zoom in, Zoom out and Zoom to fit to get close for detailed work. Zoom only changes the view, not the export.

  8. Export the result

    Pick PNG or JPG. For JPG, set Quality between 50 and 100 (default 90). Press Download to save the file or Copy to clipboard to paste it into chat, email or a document; the copy is always a PNG, even with JPG selected. Press New image to start over.

What you get

  • The counter under the image shows how many annotations are on it, for example 3 annotations.
  • The downloaded file is named annotated-WIDTHxHEIGHT, for example annotated-1920x1080.png, and is always at the image's real pixel size, whatever zoom you used on screen.
  • The percentage between the zoom buttons is the view scale. 100% is one image pixel per screen pixel, and images open fitted to the frame, never larger than 100%.
  • While cropping, the bar at the top of the image shows the size of the area you selected in pixels.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Blur and pixelate are written into the exported pixels, so the original detail under them is gone from the downloaded or copied file. Fill is only a light tint, so use the blur tool, not a filled box, to hide text.
  • Remember session saves the original image and your marks as separate layers in this browser. When you are redacting private details, leave it off on a shared computer.
  • Pasting another image with Ctrl+V, or pressing New image, replaces the current image and its annotations without asking, and Undo cannot bring them back. Download first if you want to keep the work.
  • Use PNG for screenshots with text, because it stays sharp. JPG is smaller for photos, and any transparent areas become white.
  • Single-letter shortcuts such as A for Arrow do not fire while you are typing in a field. Undo keeps the last 100 steps.

Privacy and limits

The image is opened, edited and exported by your own browser. Nothing is uploaded. Nothing is stored unless you tick Remember session, which keeps the image and marks in this browser's local storage until you untick it. If the image is too large to keep, the box unticks itself and a message says so. Copy to clipboard needs a browser that can copy images; otherwise use Download.

Arrows, lines & shapes Point at anything with arrows and lines, or frame it with rounded boxes and ellipses. Hold Shift for straight lines and perfect squares.
Auto-numbered step badges Drop numbered badges that increment themselves, perfect for step-by-step guides and how-to walkthroughs.
Blur & pixelate to redact Hide emails, tokens or faces with a blur or pixelate region. The redaction is baked into the exported pixels, not a removable overlay.
Text, pen & highlighter Add multi-line text labels at any font size, sketch freehand with the pen, or sweep a translucent highlighter that multiplies like a real marker.
Crop, zoom, undo & redo Crop the image, zoom to fit or in and out, and undo or redo every change. Each annotation stays an editable object you can move or restyle.

Frequently asked questions.

Is the Image Annotator free?
Yes, completely free for everyone. No sign-up, no account and no usage limits.
Is it private? Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No upload, ever. The annotator runs entirely in your browser on your own device, so your image and annotations never leave your computer and nothing is sent to a server.
Is the blur or pixelate actually removable from the exported file?
No. When you download or copy, the blur and pixelate regions are baked directly into the exported pixels, the original detail underneath is destroyed, not just visually covered. That makes it safe for redacting emails, tokens, faces and other sensitive information.
Can I edit or move an annotation after I draw it?
Yes. Every arrow, box, badge, stroke and text label is an editable object. Switch to the Select tool to drag it, change its color or width, delete it, or double-click a text label to re-edit the words. Undo and redo work on everything (Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y).
Will I lose my work if I close the tab?
By default nothing is stored, closing the tab clears the image. If you tick Remember session, the current image and annotations are saved in this browser only (never uploaded) and reload next time. Untick it or clear site data to remove them.
Which formats can I export to?
Full-resolution PNG (lossless, transparent-friendly) or JPG with an adjustable quality slider. You can also copy the annotated image directly to your clipboard in browsers that support it, then paste it into chat, email or a doc.
