How to use the Avatar Generator

This generator turns any name or piece of text into a default profile picture in one of three styles: initials, a GitHub style identicon or abstract shapes. The text is hashed and the hash picks the colors and the pattern, so the same name always gives the same avatar. Use it for placeholder pictures in apps, CRMs, docs and team pages.

Step by step

1. 1
   Type a name

   Enter a name, username or any text in Name / text. It starts as Jane Doe. The preview redraws as you type.

   Pick a style, size and shape

   Choose Initials, Identicon or Abstract. Then set Size from 64 px to 1024 px (512 px to start) and Shape as Circle, Rounded square or Square. Size and Shape apply to every style.

   Tune an initials avatar

   Letters set to Auto takes the first letter of the first two words, or the first letter of a single word. Pick 1, 2 or 3 to change that, or type up to 3 characters in Initials override. Choose a Font and Weight, and set Text size from 20% to 75% of the avatar (42% to start). Uncheck Auto colors from name to pick your own Background, Text and Gradient end colors, and check Gradient background to set a Gradient angle (135° to start).

   Tune an identicon

   Set Grid to 5 × 5, 6 × 6 or 7 × 7 and Cell style to Squares, Rounded or Dots. Under Color, keep Auto from text or pick a preset or Custom. Set the Background color or check Transparent background. Padding runs from 0% to 25% (12% to start) and Fill density from 25% to 75% (50% to start), which controls how many cells are filled.

   Tune an abstract avatar

   Set Shapes from 3 to 24 (9 to start), Shape types, Palette and Background (Light tint, Dark or Custom). Check Gradient background for a two color backdrop and set Shape opacity from 30% to 100% (80% to start). Press Shuffle variant: to step to a new arrangement for the same name.

   Export one avatar

   Press PNG for an image at the chosen size, SVG for a vector file, or Copy SVG to put the SVG code on your clipboard. Files are named after the text and the style, for example jane-doe-initials.png.

   Make avatars for a whole list

   In the batch panel, paste one name per line into Names, up to 200. Press Generate batch to preview them. Press Download ZIP for one PNG per name at the chosen size; it works with or without the preview. Check Include SVG files to add an SVG of each one.

Reading the result

• The line under the preview shows the size and style, for example 512 × 512 px · initials.
• The avatar is fixed by the text. Jane Doe always gives the same colors and pattern, and Jane doe or an extra space gives a different one, because the exact characters are hashed.
• Identicons are mirrored left to right, like GitHub identicons, so the pattern always looks balanced.
• In Abstract mode the variant number on the shuffle button is part of the recipe. The count starts at 1 on every visit, so note the number down and press Shuffle variant: until it shows that number again to recreate a variant later.

Tips and common mistakes

• Use text that will not change, such as a username or an email, so you can make the same picture here again later from the same text and settings.
• The SVG names its font but does not include it. On a device without that font the letters fall back to another typeface, so use PNG when the font must look exact.
• For small sizes like 64 px, pick a 5 × 5 grid or two letters. Fine detail turns to mush when the image is tiny.
• When two names in a batch give the same file name, the second one gets a number added, so no file is overwritten in the ZIP.
• Turn on Transparent background for identicons that will sit on colored cards or dark themes.

Privacy and limits

Every avatar is drawn on a canvas in your browser. Names are not uploaded or saved, and the ZIP file is built in the page without any outside library. Blank lines are skipped, and the batch takes the first 200 names and ignores the rest.
