How to use the HEIC to JPG Converter

This converter turns HEIC and HEIF photos, the default format on iPhones and iPads, into JPG or PNG files that open almost anywhere. It decodes each photo in your browser and saves it again in the format you pick. Use it when Windows, a website form or an older app will not accept your iPhone photos.

Step by step

   Add your photos

   Drop one or more files on the card that says Drop HEIC / HEIF photos here, or click the card to pick files. On a keyboard, focus the card and press Enter. Conversion starts at once and runs one file at a time.

   Choose the output format

   Under Convert to, pick JPG (smallest) for sharing and storage, or PNG (lossless) when you need every pixel kept. JPG is the default. Changing the format converts the whole batch again.

   Set the JPG quality

   Drag Quality between 10 and 100%. The default is 90. Lower numbers give smaller files with less detail. The batch converts again when you let go of the slider. The slider is grayed out for PNG.

   Download the results

   Press Download under any thumbnail to save that photo, or Download all (.zip) to save every converted photo in one ZIP file. Each file keeps its original name with the new extension, such as IMG_1234.jpg.

   Start again

   Press Clear to remove all photos and start over. You can also drop more files onto the card at any time once the current batch has finished.

Reading the result

• Each thumbnail shows the file name, the output format and the file size before and after conversion.
• The line next to the buttons shows how many files are done out of the total, and the combined size before and after.
• A HEIC file that holds several images, such as a burst, shows how many frames it has and a separate Download 1, Download 2 button for each. They are saved with -1, -2 and so on added to the name.
• A warning icon on a thumbnail means the file could not be decoded, usually because it is not really a HEIC or HEIF image.

Tips and common mistakes

• A JPG can come out bigger than the HEIC original, because HEIC compresses photos more tightly. That is normal. Lower the quality if size matters.
• A photo saved as PNG is much larger than the same photo as JPG. Use PNG only when you need lossless files, for example for further editing.
• The converted files are made from the decoded pixels, so they do not carry the photo's metadata, such as the date taken or the location.
• Wait for a batch to finish before adding more files. While it is converting, the tool asks you to wait and ignores new files.
• On an iPhone you can avoid HEIC for future photos by choosing Most Compatible under Settings, Camera, Formats.

Privacy and limits

Your photos are decoded and converted by your own browser and are never uploaded. The converter and ZIP code are loaded from this site, not from a third party. Nothing is saved after you close the tab. Every converted photo is held in memory until you press Clear, so on a phone it helps to convert a large set in smaller batches.
