How to use the Emoji Picker

This picker holds 711 emoji in nine categories, each tagged with a name and a few keywords. Click one and it is copied to your clipboard and shown in the detail panel, where you can also copy its Unicode codepoint, HTML entity or JavaScript escape. It suits writers, social media managers and developers who need the exact character or its code.

Step by step

   Search or browse

   Type a word in Search emoji, such as heart, fire or party. The grid filters as you type and matches both names and keywords, so heart finds 21 emoji. To browse instead, click a category chip, from All through Smileys, Animals & Nature and on to Flags.

   Click an emoji to copy it

   Clicking any emoji in the grid copies the character at once and shows a short Copied message. The emoji also appears large in the detail panel with its name.

   Copy a code instead

   The detail panel lists four versions of the selected emoji: the character, the Unicode codepoint (U+1F600 for grinning face), the HTML decimal entity (😀) and the JavaScript escape (\uD83D\uDE00). Press the Copy button next to the one you need.

   Reuse recent picks

   Every emoji you click joins Recently copied above the grid, newest first, up to 18 of them. Click one there to copy it again, or press Clear to empty the list.

   Copy a whole set

   After a search or a category filter, press Copy all shown to copy every emoji in the grid as one string. The counter beside the button, for example 711 emoji, tells you how many that is.

Reading the codes

• Some emoji are built from more than one code point. The victory hand shows U+270C U+FE0F, and its entity and escape include both parts, so copy the whole value.
• Country flags, such as flag united states, are pairs of regional letters, so their codepoint line shows two values and their JavaScript escape shows four. The other flags, such as chequered flag, are ordinary symbols.
• The JavaScript escape is written in UTF-16 code units, so most emoji need two escape parts, as grinning face does. It works inside any JavaScript or JSON string.

Tips and common mistakes

• Search works inside the selected category. If a word finds nothing, switch the chip back to All.
• The picture depends on your device's emoji font. The copied character is the same everywhere, but Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung draw it differently.
• Use the HTML entity in templates or emails that might not be saved as UTF-8, and the plain character everywhere else.
• If your browser blocks the clipboard you will see Copy failed, select manually. Select the value in the detail panel and copy it by hand.

Privacy and limits

The emoji list and the search run in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Recently copied emoji are kept in this browser's local storage under the key dh-emoji-recents, so they come back on your next visit and stay in step across open tabs. Clear removes them, and so does clearing site data.
