How to use the Audio Trimmer & Editor

This editor lets you cut, fade, normalize, reverse and change the volume of an audio clip on a live waveform. Your browser decodes the file with the Web Audio API, the edits change the raw samples in memory, and the result is written out as a 16-bit WAV file. Use it to clean up a voice memo, cut a ringtone or trim the silence off a recording.

Step by step

   Load or record audio

   Drop a file on the card that says "Drop an audio file", or click it to browse. Any format your browser can decode works, usually MP3, WAV, OGG and M4A. To capture sound instead, press Record from mic, allow microphone access, watch the timer and level meter, then press Stop recording. The take loads into the editor on its own.

   Select a region on the waveform

   Click and drag across the waveform to select a region. Drag a handle to move one edge. With the waveform focused, the left and right arrow keys move the end of the selection by 1% of the clip, Home moves the start to the beginning and End moves the end to the finish. Select all picks the whole clip again.

   Listen before you cut

   Press Play selection to hear only the selected region, or Play all to hear the whole clip. An orange playhead moves across the waveform. Press Stop to end playback early.

   Trim and fade

   Press Trim to selection to keep the selected region and drop everything else. Fade in (selection) ramps the selected region up from silence in a straight line, and Fade out (selection) ramps it down to silence. Select just the first or last second or two before you fade, or the fade covers the whole selection.

   Set the volume

   Drag the Volume / gain slider from 0% to 300%. The default is 100%, which changes nothing, and the readout beside it shows the change in decibels. Press Apply gain to apply it to the whole clip, after which the slider returns to 100%. Normalize instead raises the whole clip so its loudest peak sits just under full scale.

   Reverse or undo

   Reverse flips the whole clip end to end. Reset to original brings back the clip exactly as it was first loaded and undoes every edit at once. There is no single step undo.

   Download the WAV

   Press Download WAV to save the edited clip. Tick Selection only first to export just the selected region. Press Load another to edit a different file.

Reading the editor

• The line above the waveform shows the file name, the channel count, the sample rate in kHz and the length, for example 2 ch, 44.1 kHz, 0:12.480.
• Under the waveform, Selection shows the start and end of your region, Length shows how long it is and Total shows the length of the whole clip, all in minutes, seconds and milliseconds.
• The gain readout converts the slider to decibels: 200% shows +6.0 dB, 50% shows -6.0 dB and 0% is full silence.
• When you have changed the clip, the note "Edited copy, original is one Reset away." appears under the edit buttons. A message at the bottom of the screen confirms each edit, and Normalize reports how many decibels it added.

Tips and common mistakes

• Apply gain cuts off anything that would pass full scale, so a high slider value can flatten the loudest peaks. Normalize does not clip: it lifts the loudest peak to just under full scale, so try it first when a clip is too quiet.
• Fade, Trim and Selection only all use the current selection. After a trim the selection resets to the whole new clip, so select again before you fade.
• Apply gain, Normalize and Reverse always work on the whole clip, whatever you have selected.
• The export is always WAV, which is much larger than an MP3 of the same length. Convert it elsewhere if you need a small file.
• Exported files are named after the source, for example song-edited.wav, or song-clip-edited.wav when Selection only is ticked.

Privacy and limits

Decoding, editing, playback and the WAV export all run in your browser, and no audio is uploaded. Microphone audio stays on your device and is only recorded while the timer runs. Nothing is saved between visits, so reloading the page clears the clip. Files over 200 MB trigger a warning because they may not fit in memory, and the whole decoded clip is held in memory while you edit.
