Pixels in, characters out. All on your device.

Each block of the image is averaged to a brightness value and mapped to a character, with denser glyphs for darker areas. Because monospace characters are taller than they are wide, the height is scaled so your art keeps the right proportions. Copy the text anywhere, save a plain .txt, or render a crisp PNG. Your photo never leaves the browser.

§ 02 · what you can do

Everything the converter can do.

  • Convert any JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF into ASCII text art entirely in your browser , drag & drop or click to browse.
  • Tune the output width from 20 to 240 columns for coarse thumbnails or fine-detail renders, with a live preview on every change.
  • Switch character ramps between Classic (10 levels), Blocks (█▓▒░) and a 70-level Detailed set.
  • Keep the source colors inside the ASCII output, or stay monochrome , transparent pixels read as background.
  • Invert the brightness ramp for a light-on-dark terminal aesthetic.
  • Copy to clipboard, download a .txt or export a crisp PNG , the PNG keeps your color mode and inverted background.
§ 03 · how to use it

Four steps, no manual.

  1. Drop an image onto the card above, or click it to browse. The file never leaves your device.
  2. Adjust the width slider and character set , the preview rebuilds instantly with every change.
  3. Toggle Keep source colors or Invert to match where the art will live , light documents or dark terminals.
  4. Hit Copy text, Download .txt or Download PNG. Load another image any time.
§ 04 · faq

Frequently asked questions.

Is Image to ASCII Art free?
Yes , completely free for everyone. No sign-up, no account and no usage limits.
Is it private? Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No upload, ever. The image is read on a canvas inside your own browser, converted locally and never sent to a server , your photos stay on your device.
Does it work offline?
Yes , once the page has loaded, converting, copying and downloading all keep working without a connection, because every step runs locally in your browser.
What is the difference between the character sets?
Classic uses ten characters ( @%#*+=-:. ) for a traditional look, Blocks uses solid shade blocks for a chunky pixel feel, and Detailed maps brightness across 70 characters for the smoothest gradients. Combine any of them with the width slider , more columns means finer detail.
Should I export text or PNG?
Copy text or download the .txt when you want real characters , for terminals, READMEs, code comments or chat. Export a PNG when you want a shareable image: it renders each character to a crisp canvas and preserves source colors and the inverted dark background.
