Shopify vs Wix. For ecommerce. For scale.
Wix wins when your site is a brochure with a small shop attached. Shopify wins when the store is the business and growth is the plan. This is the honest breakdown, store profile by store profile.
On this page
- Wix started as a website builder and bolted on ecommerce later. Shopify did the reverse: it was built for stores first, site tools second.
- Wix fits a service business, creator, or small-catalog brand. The site is a brochure with a checkout on the side.
- Shopify fits a store-first brand. Growth here rides on checkout, inventory, apps, and clean international scaling.
- The real question is not "which is better." It is which sentence describes your business.
- Both platforms are capable. The heritage of each still decides where it wins.
Wix for brochure-first. Shopify for ecommerce-first.
Pick by heritage. Wix was built as a website builder and added ecommerce later. Shopify was built for ecommerce and added site-builder tools later. That origin still shapes where each one wins.
Wix fits a service business, a creator, or a small-catalog brand, where the site is mostly a brochure with a checkout on the side. Shopify fits a store-first brand whose growth depends on checkout, inventory, apps, and international reach scaling cleanly. So the real question is not which is better. It is which sentence above describes your business.

Five answers.
Is Wix or Shopify better for beginners?
Wix is easier to start. Shopify is easier to grow into. Wix's drag-and-drop editor lets a non-designer build a working site in a few hours, with no theme constraints.
Shopify's admin is purpose-built for ecommerce, so inventory, orders, customers, and discounts are first-class rather than bolted onto a site builder. Once a store grows past 200 SKUs or $100K a year, the ramp from Wix gets steeper than Shopify's starting learning curve.
Which has lower fees?
On sticker price, Wix wins. Its subscription runs $17-$159/mo across tiers, with no transaction fees on Wix Payments. Shopify starts at $29/mo (Basic), then $79 (Grow), $299 (Advanced), and $2,300+ (Plus), plus 0.5-2 percent fees on non-Shopify Payments gateways.
Under $50K a year, Wix is cheaper. Above $250K a year, Shopify's efficiency and ecosystem depth usually save more than the subscription gap costs you.
Which has better SEO?
Shopify has a real SEO edge on ecommerce queries. Product schema, canonical handling, sitemap generation, mobile Core Web Vitals, and international SEO (hreflang, multi-currency) are all more robust there.
Wix has improved a lot since 2020. Even so, URL patterns, page weight, and limited robots.txt control still surface on enterprise audits. For a brochure site with a small shop, Wix's SEO is adequate. For a catalog-driven brand ranking on product-specific queries, Shopify is the safer bet.
When do Wix stores outgrow the platform?
Watch for three signals. First, your SKU count nears 500, the mark where Wix's product management starts to strain. Second, you need apps or integrations Wix does not offer natively, such as advanced subscription management, complex B2B pricing, or multi-warehouse inventory.
Third, international expansion needs more than Wix Multilingual gives you: hreflang control, multi-currency checkout, and regional tax handling. Hit any two of these, and most brands migrate to Shopify within 6 to 12 months.
How hard is a Wix to Shopify migration?
Moderate. Products, customers, and orders export cleanly through Wix APIs or CSV. Design does not carry over, since Wix's editor output is proprietary, so your new Shopify store is a fresh design built to the new theme.
The SEO work is the longer pole: a full URL map, a 301 redirect plan, and title and meta preservation across ranking pages. A typical Wix-to-Shopify migration runs 8 to 12 weeks including design. See /services/shopify-migration/ for the full process.
Platform audit. Then decide.
