What the off the shelf formulation products actually do well
The science layer in this category is genuinely good, and that is worth saying before anything else. AMTS.Cattle.Pro and NDS Professional are serious nutrition models built on the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System, and a nutritionist who knows one of them can do things a general purpose optimiser cannot. Adifo BESTMIX is a capable enterprise formulation product used widely across commercial feed manufacturing. Format International and the Brill lineage cover least cost formulation with long track records behind them.
Least cost formulation itself is a linear program and the mathematics has been settled for decades. These products wrap that in nutrient requirement models, ingredient libraries and reporting that reflect real animal science, and they are updated as the underlying nutrient requirement publications move.
Our clearest advice on this page: do not build a nutrition model. If a developer offers to write you a nutrition engine, end the meeting. Keep the model you trust and build around it, or do not build at all.
And for most readers, do not build at all is the right answer. A single nutritionist serving a handful of clients, or a small mill with a stable product list, is well covered by a desktop model plus a disciplined process, and the money is better spent on laboratory work. That describes the majority of operations that ask us about this, and we tell them so before quoting anything. The build case begins only when formulation stops being one person with one model and becomes a process crossing several people, several plants and a procurement function.
Where they stop: the optimiser solves a cleaner problem than your mill has
A dairy nutritionist finishes a reformulation on Tuesday afternoon. Corn silage came back from the laboratory wetter than the last sample, so dry matter shifts, inclusion rates move, and the least cost solution changes across four diets. He exports a printout, emails it to the feed manager, and the feed manager types the new inclusions into the batching system on Thursday morning after milking. Between Tuesday and Thursday the cows ate the old ration against the new silage. Nobody logs that.
Six weeks later components are down and three people have three theories, none of which can be tested, because no record exists of which formula was actually batched on which day from which ingredient lots.
The second gap is the constraint set. The mathematics is fine. The real constraints are not nutritional. The mill has a fixed number of bins and an ingredient only exists if it is in one. Micro ingredients go through a specific scale with a minimum weighable amount, so an inclusion below that threshold cannot physically be batched. The mixer has a capacity band. Some products cannot follow others in sequence because of drug carryover, and medicated feed manufacturing under the federal current good manufacturing practice rules carries sequencing, flushing and record requirements that a nutrition model knows nothing about. A contract commits you to move a byproduct tonnage this month whether the solver likes it or not.
So the optimiser returns a formula, and a person adjusts it by hand for plant reality. Every one of those adjustments is an undocumented decision, and the third gap follows from it: when performance drops, there is nothing to investigate.
The arithmetic: cost to build against per seat formulation licences
Use your own renewal figure. Formulation products in this category are licensed per seat, often per species module on top, and mills usually carry a separate licence from the nutrition consultancy that serves them. Take your annual total and divide it by the number of people who actually formulate.
Then price the part that is not on any invoice. Two days of lag between a decision and a batch, multiplied across how often you reformulate. The hours your feed manager spends retyping. And the exposure from one transcription error in an inclusion rate, which is rare per instance and reaches thousands of animals before it shows in performance data.
On the build side, a first release at $70,000 to $150,000 spread over three years is $23,000 to $50,000 a year. With three formulation seats and one mill that is $7,700 to $16,700 per seat annually, and no licence is close to that, so buy. With eight seats across three mills it is $2,900 to $6,250 per seat and the picture changes. Measured against tonnage, a hundred thousand tons a year carries $0.23 to $0.50 a ton, and half a million tons carries $0.05 to $0.10.
The crossover sits near three mills, or roughly eight formulation seats, or about a hundred thousand tons a year, whichever you reach first. Below one mill and three seats, buy the model and improve the process instead.
What a custom operating layer actually costs, year one and year two

Data migration runs 10 to 25 percent of build cost, and here it is the nutrient matrix rather than transaction history. That library exists as copies inside desktop applications on several machines, and those copies have quietly diverged. Regulatory fit. Medicated feed manufacturing carries sequencing and flushing rules, veterinary feed directive handling for the relevant drugs, and record requirements that must be produced on demand. Preventive controls for animal food under the food safety rules add hazard analysis and monitoring records. If your sequencing evidence is maintained separately from your formulation, you are keeping two versions of the same truth and hoping they agree.
Scale economics. Above roughly three mills or eight formulation seats the per seat cost of a build falls under any licence, and tonnage growth does not increase it.
A workflow that is your competitive advantage. Your nutrient matrix is the accumulation of years of laboratory results, supplier knowledge and judgment about what an energy value means in your system. It is arguably the most valuable asset the nutrition department owns, and it currently lives in copies. Governing it, with dated versions and an approval chain, is a business decision expressed as software.
Integration sprawl across three or more systems. The nutrition model, the batching controller, a procurement spreadsheet of prices and contracts, and laboratory results arriving as documents. The value sits in the joins, particularly the loop that returns batch actuals so you can measure variance between formulated and batched at ingredient level.

How to decide in a week, and the question that settles it
Monday, pick a day six weeks ago and try to answer four questions about one diet: which formula version was in force, which batches were made from it, which ingredient lots went into them, and which laboratory results the formulation was solved against. Time how long that takes and note how many people you had to ask.
Tuesday, measure the lag. Take your last five reformulations and record the hours between the nutritionist approving a change and the mill batching against it. Wednesday, ask your feed manager how many inclusion rates he has adjusted by hand this month because the solver output could not actually be batched. Thursday, ask your batching vendor what interface exists on your controller generation, by name, and what it would cost them to expose it.
Friday, put those four answers together. If the history question took ten minutes, the lag is under a shift and nothing gets adjusted by hand, buy the model and stop here. If nobody could answer the history question at all, move to a paid discovery phase rather than a build. Should a single mill build formulation software?
Usually not. One person, one model and one mill can hold the whole system in their head, and the software is functioning as a calculator. The exception is a single mill making medicated feed across many products where sequencing records and traceability are the actual burden, in which case a narrow build around records and batch history is proportionate without touching formulation.
What is the difference between a nutrition model and a formulation system?
