A man at the counter says he is collecting a second grader. The clerk has a laminated approved pickup list printed in August, a memory of a custody conversation in October, and six people in the queue. She has about fifteen seconds, and the two possible errors are not symmetrical. Refusing a legitimate parent produces an angry phone call. Releasing a child to someone under a court restriction produces a police report and a superintendent explaining himself on camera.

This is where packaged products strain, and it is not their fault. Registry screening is theirs.
